I called our friend at TWC, lead technician Chris Caling to see if he had any info on SDV tuning adapters. Unfortunately, he had heard nothing, but said I should call him back every month or so to see if there is any new news. I am anxious to get my hands on one of these tuning adapters so my TiVo HD DVRs can receive the SDV channels. You would think TWC would allow the people who are big into HD...like the members of this forum with TiVo's...to beta test these devices.

A ray of hope: The Tuning Adapter was made available to Comcast customers in Cherry Hill, NJ today. Link to post.

The guy who posted the letter above claims he got his tuning adapter today, hooked it up, and it is working. :-)

Interestingly, Comcast in Cherry Hill, NJ hasn't implemented SDV yet.
Imagine that, Comcast has provided a solution to the cable card vs. SDV issue before actually impacting their customers with SDV! I wish Albany TWC had that business model.
In September 2006, Albany TWC became one of the first cable company divisions to implement SDV. I believe TWC in Austin, TX was the first to do so in 2004. We have 121 channels being delivered via SDV (36 of those are HD channels). So why wouldn't Albany TWC be the first to offer these tuning adapters to its cable card customers? I can't find a single person at Albany TWC who knows when the tuning adapters will be available.

I called Tom Landry at TWC on Monday, Oct 6th. I asked about the availability of the Tuning Adapters. He said he would look into it and get back to me. On Friday, Oct 10th, after not hearing from him, I called again. He said he had not found any info, but would ask his supervisor. He put me on hold for a few minutes and when he came back on, he just said, "We don't have any information yet." I explained how Comcast in NJ has been distributing them since October 6th. Tom went on to say he didn't think the Tuning Adapters would be available until TWC got their 2-way cable cards later this year. I told him the Tuning Adapters do not have a cable card in them and the introduction of 2-way cable cards has nothing to do with the Tuning Adapters. I again offered to be a beta-tester for them and Tom told me he would call when he found out any information.

Tom called me back a few minutes ago and told me that TWC is currently testing the device in their Charlotte, NC office. He also told me they don't expect to release the Tuning Adapters until next year. I explained that both the Austin, TX and San Antonio, TX TWC divisions are offering to pre-order the tuning adapters on their websites. Here's a few links to the San Antonio TWC tuning adapter pre-order page and the Austin TWC tuning adapter pre-order page. It is somewhat of a relief to talk to someone at Albany TWC who is at least aware of the existence of the Tuning Adapters. I'm still hopeful that we may have these things before Santa comes to visit.

Hey there. Kudo's to your site, which I found via the Tivocommunity site. If not for this forum, I'd not now be 'on the list' for these adapters that I promised my family 'would be available soon' back in January. Thanks!

Looks like they decided to update the canned response after mine was sent.

I just filled out the form this evening (10/15). I noticed the TW website (http://www.timewarnercable.com/Albany/products/cable/sdv/default.html) doesn't mention anything about CC TVs, just TiVo. Anyone know if there would be a difference? I'd love to be without a STB again...

Since Tivo worked directly with cablelabs on this device, I would imagine only the Tivo devices mentioned on the link above would be compatible. The device requires a USB port to connect up to the Tivo. I know my TV doesn't have a USB port.
Also, the Tivo devices would likely need some type of firmware upgrade to recognize and work in tandem with the tuning adapter. Since it is an after thought, the original firmware of the Tivo (and any other possibly compatible CE device) was not written to recognize a external tuning device. Tivo has likely already included the required code in updates over the past 6 months to be prepped for this adapters availability.
Other 1way cablecard CE devices which may have a USB port would not have any idea what to do with this tuning adapter. The likeliness of each of the device manufacturers running out to engineer software updates for every model they sold and get them to consumers is very unlikely. They have very little to lose since we already paid them for the TV and do not pay them a monthly fee. Tivo on the other hand would!

I received notice from a top-notch reliable source at the local TWC Division that they have the Tuning Adapters in-hand at the office and are waiting for notice from TWC Corporate before distributing them to customers.
