I am a bit confused, someone please help follow this. If most of the people on this chat page have a cable tuner from tW and a cablecard why not just watch the new hd chs on the cable tuner? I use the 8300 and it works on the sdv stuff mentioned. My tv had cablecard as well. I rarely use it and it only costs me a couple bucks so I don't feel too left out. My thought is its a old tech now. I read the fcc forced tv companies to incorporate cablecard into the sets maybe abit too early in the HD world. I read the tru2way devices that are being dev now are all going to be compatible with sdv and would be able to get these new chs. Looking around at the local stores I don't see new tvs having the cablecard since the manufacturers seemed to have abandoned the tech. Now will going to dish or Verison allow me to use my cablecard to pick up channels? It seems that I would need a receiver from them to get the chs just like I do from cable. I would rather get these new hd chs than not personally. If it means death to this cablecard then so be it. With my tail between my legs, back in my dog house for a cold night... For me it's because I have a TivoHD. I HAD the SA 8300 HD DVR piece of crap. I'm sorry, but any DVR that can't handle 'season pass', randomly reboots, randomly deletes all your "season passes", randomly records 2 minutes of a 1 hour show, etc. is a piece of crap and I refuse to pay for it.

If most of the people on this chat page have a cable tuner from tW and a cablecard why not just watch the new hd chs on the cable tuner? I have two TiVo HD's, which use cable cards to tune digital cable. The TiVo has an exceptional user interface and allows me to transfer shows between DVRs, show my home photos on my HDTV's, and save TV shows to my computer hard drive (or DVDs). There's much more it can do, too. The TW issued DVR will not do these things and my experiences showed it was not a reliable recorder. TiVo has announced a "tuning resolver" is being developed to allow TiVo's to received SDV channels. The tuning resolver will reportedly be available in 2Q 2008 (April-June). I kept a cable box around so I could report on the status of SDV deployment for this message board. Only caution on the tuning resolver is that only ONE company even has a prototype so far (that they've announced). And it's not SA. From what I can tell on the Tivo forums, SA has not even begun to develop one yet. And of course, TW here uses SA equipment.

Why is the FCC allowing this?
I can see if they want to add NEW channels, but taking channels away from us cable card users has to be in violation of some kind of FCC rule.
Why mandate cable cards in the first place if the cable companies are just going to find a way to make you rent their equipment?
I haven't gotten a copy of this letter and I have two multi-stream cable cards. I also subscribe to the HD Tier and Universal HD is in the HD Tier.

I think TWC should reimburse their customers the value of now-defunct equipment that many subscribers invested in. And yes, the FCC should be all over this. The onus is on TWC subscribers to gripe to the FCC and NYS-AG's office (in postal-delivered letters, not e-mail or phone calls.)

Legally the FCC is at fault. They forced the cable companies and tv manufacturers to work around a standard, cablecard, that was defunct from the start. I don't rem hearing comcast and warner cable out their pushing for cablecard. They just met the rules imposed by the fcc.
The fcc pushed everyone into this knowing it was not able to get vod services, and that it wasnt compatible with satelite and some other video services.
I personally don't feel upset at cable, I am upset that I was forced into buying a technology that was not destined to last. I didnt get to say no I dont want cablecard built into my tv and I didnt go out looking for a tv that had it. Although I must say the people at best buy touted it as the best thing. I now feel the cost of that tv was higher than it needed to be due to having cablecard.
Lets keep in perspective the only reason for the DTV transition next year... BILLIONS of $$$$$$ for our government. Maybe that will cover the $600 rebate I am getting for taxes and the 2 dig receiver coupons I am getting. Highly doubt it. Stuff your pockets a little more Mr. VP, you only gots 10 mths left!
Back out to shovel some white crap... Don't forget, dont eat the yellow snow!

The cable companies ARE to blame (and so is the FCC for failing to enforce it and let cable get away with it). They wanted and still do, a proprietary system to force us to rent their STB and use TV THEIR way, not "our way". Cable had TEN YEARS to get with cable card and they were dragged kicking and screaming into it and as a result, made it as lame as possible. It's no surprise that after the FCC required it, they come up with a technology to circumvent it so you have to go BACK to using their equipment at their rates. You're upset because you're forced to buy a technology? You didn't have to buy a TV with cable card (there's plenty out there without them). But with SDV you ARE forced to use TW STB and pay for it. And, if you want a DVR for HD now (except for the locals) you're forced to rent their crappy STB with their crappy software.

hey buddy lighten up! This is TV we are talkin about.. If you only get off on TV in life then maybe you need to get a life!
When I was buying my tv, all the models of the Samsung and Sony in the size and type of tv I wanted ONLY came with cable card!
That was then, and now look at things. You would have to go searching for a TV that has it. Of course there is TIVO but I never liked using others Tivos so I never got one.

I agree Shane, I had cable card, realized it was junk... got rid of it.Now I use converters, not perfect, but much less problems. I don't believe that cable is "Forcing" me into buying a cable card, I can get a dish, a converter, or for now 'rabbit ears' if I choose to do so. What changed my mind was when the cable guy was at my house for the 4th time for cable card, and basicaly said "look, these arent going so well, we waste more time & money rolling trucks and sendinf people out for these, and at the end of the day,we cant' totally fix everything, your better off with a converter,if not I'll be back in a week or so if you want to keep the card." Swtiched... havent seen them since

I'm not aware of any TV that won't work with a TW STB, so I'm not sure why you were FORCED to use a cable card. And this is a board that discusses (gasp) TV, BTW. You want to talk about life or sports or religion or politics or other things, go find another board.

And that's bulls***

Absolutley, XZI, but for the 6 bucks or whatever the difference is from the card, to me its worth not having to deal with all the headaches and problems I keep reading about on here. Like I said, they basicall told me the card sucks, so it just saves me some headaches, aspirin isnt cheap either. To each their own right.
