What was the cost to ship it? I shipped it in the box it came in and it cost $16 from the Latham UPS store on Avis Drive, including insurance.

Received the DVR back from Sony this afternoon. On the Invoice, it states:
I put the DVR through auto setup with both OTA and cable TV (no cable card). It registered: 10 analog channels via OTA 13 digital channels via OTA 10 analog channels via cable 4 digital channels via cable

You should get more than 4 digital cable channels. Be sure to channel +/-. I suspect you'll find sub-channels on the "4 Digital Cable" channels found. Also, if you subscribe to cable TV, shouldn't you be able to get all the analog cable stations without the card?

Without the CableCard inserted I get all 70+ analog channels & 36+ digital channels this includes my HD locals. Most of my digitals are channel 98 sub-channels 98.1, 98.2, 98.3, etc...

If you plug the cable wire directly into your tv and set your tv's (analog) tuner reception to Cable (not antenna) and you subscribe to basic and standard you should be able to get all the cable analog stations. Does this happen for you?

Does this happen for you? I figured out what I had hooked up wrong. I have the coax from my antenna split (one for TV and one to my audio receiver for FM reception) and had both of these hooked to my new Sony DVR. What puzzles me is how I was able to pick up the few cable TV stations this way? I re-ran auto-scan on the cable input on the Sony DVR with the cable coax hooked to the cable input and it found 77 analog & 29 digital cable channels.

I got stiffed after I ordered it from the Tweeter site. They sent an email saying they couldn't fill the order. So I'm S.O.L. I guess. I emailed them back asking for a sub, but I doubt it will go anywhere. I'll just have to recoup my loss by bad mouthing them on any forum I can I guess ; )

TVGuide tech called me back today informing me that a new software version has been release: version 09, which addresses several issues including channel sorting and the entering of 4 digit channel numbers in the channel editor. The 09 tvguide software will only be available on new hardware and you can't upgrade from the 08 to 09 version because the software version is tied to the hardware, however, there will be a patch to the 08 software with the 4 channel editor enhancement and other fixes. I have tvguide software version 08.06.30. The patch wont be available for another 3 to 6 months.
Note: I left a voice mail for Sherry at 1-800-386-7380 back in March explaining the above issues and they now returned my call. I think I should be grateful for the returned call.

So, how do you get the patch?

So, how do you get the patch? The Sony DHG-HDD500 has two software applications: - The Sony software, which you have to send the unit to Sony for the upgrade.
- The TV Guide software is updated automatically along with the channel data from your local PBS stations. You will receive the patch in the same manner.

I hooked up a HDD250 for a frien a few days ago. Connected via TWC only without a cablecard. Ran auto setup, but it did not find the HD channels. They were listed in the TV Guide (1806, 1810, 1813, etc), but they could not be tuned in.
In the setup, after the zip code question, it asked what cable company and it listed: TWC Schenectady - Digital TWC Schenectady - Analog TWC Albany - Digital TWC Albany - Analog
I chose TWC Albany - Digital. This guy lived in Niskayuna, zip code 12302. Should it matter?
Any ideas why I couldn't receive WRGB HD, WTEN HD, & WNYT HD?

I'm not familiar with either the Sony DVR or TWC's lineup in Niskayuna, but I can tell you where the broadcast digitals are in Delmar. I'm sure you know that channel numbers like 1806, 1810, etc. are virtual channels, not real. Real cable channels go up to 135 (some tuners only go to 125). The broadcast channels and a few others are not scrambled, and you should be able to get them without a CableCard. You don't need a Digital or even Standard subscription; Basic is sufficient. Here's the Delmar lineup: 104-1 WTEN weather loop 104-2 WNYT weather loop 104-3 WMHT-HD (PBS-HD) 104-4 WRGB-HD 104-6 WRGB radar 105-7 WXXA-HD 105-10 WNYT-HD 105-17 WTEN-HD 108-12 WRNN 108-20 WEWB (WCWN)-HD WMHT-SD and WNYA-SD are not on cable. I'll leave it to you to find the other unscrambled channels. Mostly tutorials and ads for VOD movies. You might also consider OTA reception. Even though two of the channels are on VHF, I have no trouble receiving all of them with a 4-bay bowtie in the attic, or even a desktop UHF antenna (Zenith Silver Sensor).
