DOes everyone get dropouts when watching a recorded show on the 8300 HD DVR? Especially 1808 (FOX HDTV). I don't record anything on FOX, but in the last few days, I have had the video & audio freeze for a few seconds on both Third Watch and ER. Also, I have had the video freeze, but the audio keep going while watching NYPD Blue. However, WTEN's Chief Engineer has told us that this is a WTEN problem and NOT a TWC problem. (it was happening on the live versions, via both OTA and TWC)

As mentioned before in this thread, the 8300 has some performance issues. While an HD DVR is great, the less than HD picture you have to watch isn't. This type of thing is probably a few years away from actually working AND being cheap enough to be part of a cable box.
Bob, likes his HD image. Won't settle for less.

Was a software update just released because I notice that my TV has stopped "cracking" when I enter the program guide for the first time?

Anyone know if the 8300 is "better" than the 8000?
Specifically:
The 8000 unit (HD) that I have likes to exhibit this behavior:
a) Randomly NOT record shows b) If a show is set to record (like: Record all episodes in this timeslot), and it's pre-empted by something else (let's say a special 2-hour movie), it changes my scheduled recording to then, ALWAYS record that 2-hour movie instead.
I don't have HDMI (just component). But just wondering if the PQ is worse on the 8300 than on the 8000 (which I have set for bypass mode so that the TV does the upconverting rather than the SA unit as my Mits. has a better scalar than the SA unit does).

Does anyone have experience with adding an external hard drive or sending recorded shows to a computer for burning to their 8300? Do you have to have firewire ports on you dvr to do this and if so does TWAlbany have to provide a dvr that has them?

The firewire ports will not allow transmitting data (audio/video) to a PC for the purpose you mention. This data is encrypted to protect the content from infringing on copyright laws. The port is active though and may recognize an additional HDD connected to it (TWC will not support doing this at this time though!!). Since the data will still be encrypted on the HDD, any content which is recorded to it will not be recognized by anything other than that dvr unit which saved it. This is a built in way Scientific Atlanta has of protecting content from distribution. TWC will provide an HD converter (non-dvr) with an active Firewire port for direct connection to a display device only. The firewire port is a low bandwidth port which when compared to HDMI is inferior for future HD uses, 1280p etc (if we ever see it . Hope this helps!!

I could've sworn there was a way to do this (there's a thread over on avsforums on how to do this with WinXP and the TW SA boxes). But it may not be "doable" with an HD box. The firewire ports will not allow transmitting data (audio/video) to a PC for the purpose you mention. This data is encrypted to protect the content from infringing on copyright laws. Does anyone know if the SATA port on the back of the 8300HD is active? Is there any way to determine if it is able to be used to connect an external SATA HDD? I called TW and all they can say is "they don't use it". The best info I can come up with is that it "should" be able to be used if the 8300 is running the SARA software. I hate to invest in an additional HDD if it can't be used to expand the 8300HD storage capacity. Thanks.

I just picked up a new 8300 and I find it without a pass through option... regardless of the setting it will only output 1080i. Its connected via HDMI to a 1377X760 plasma and I would rather not have the box upconverting 720P only to have the set downconvert it again.

I believe when the HDMI port is connected, the box automatically switches to HDMI video output, not allowing "pass-through".

Try to first enter the stb's set up wizard (stb power=off press guide & info together (on the unit, not remote!) until you see a picture on tv. Follow onscreen options and select advanced set up. Accept all the resolutions (that your tv supports) and that you want the STB to pass 480i std, 720p, and 1080i. Press exit to complete). Power the STB on and enter into its general settings. Select Set:picture format and set this to auto-dvi (which replaces pass-through when the STB detects its HDMI connection is connected to a HDMI device) This should correct this issue for you.
