I am using HDMI from the 8300 to HDMI TV and having some problems someone might know more about. While I had the TV hooked up via component cables and using the wizard I had 720p (tv native), 480p wide and 480p standard selected as outputs. I had it set to passthrough and when I had an HD channel on the box switched to 720p and displayed nicely. When an SD channel was selected the box switched to 480p and the channel displayed full screen, no sidebars; the picture was quite good as well. I then hooked up using the HDMI cable and had the same outputs selected in the wizard. The passthrough mode goes away instead to a Auto DVI/HDMI feature (this automatically puts the box to 720p which gives SD channels sidebars). So, I utilized the Upconvert 2 which should take 720&1080 to 720 and 480i/p to 480p. Alas, everything is fine on the HD channels but when I tune to SD the box switches to 480p like its supposed to but I get a blank screen on my tv. Does this make any sense??

So I finally bit and picked up an HDMI cable to try it out. It worked right out of the box without having to change anything, but the picture quality is terrible, worse than I get through component cables.
At first the image seemed really soft, which I was able to address by changing my set's sharpness, but now the image has a subtle jitter to it that's very annoying. Do I need to do anything other than plug in the HDMI cable to set the box up to use it properly? I wasn't expecting a real improvement over the component output, but I was hoping for at least equal quality...
And, sorry olive, but I didn't get any blank screens, so I can't help ya out.

Does anyone know if the firewire port is active on the 8300HD box?

I am having some pretty bad skipping/sound loss when watching recorded shows. Can this be a problem with the hard drive or something else? Also, as per previous post, is there a firewire port on the back of the 8300?(I just don't feel like pulling out my whole setup to look) and if so is it active?

The symptoms you describe point to the hard drive. I had the same issue and TW replaced my 8300HD.
On another note, I've noticed lately on some shows I watch and record I'm getting compression artifacts here and there...
Is TW over compressing their digital channels ala Directv?

I have noticed the artifacts too lately. I no longer have directv but I ralely had artifacts when I did. I am kind of missing directv....the HD and SD picture was better.

I can assume by your response that Directv has now a better PQ than in the past because I had Directv in 1996 and the over compression artifacts were on most channels. I switch to Dish Network in 1998 and it was a better PQ until they too started having over compression artifacts on most channels...it was annoying and when it rained or snowed it became frustrating...anyways...I switch to TW to avoid the artifacts...and well...they are back!

This is getting frustrating... my 8300 decided awhile ago to not accept any new recordings, so we swapped it and got a new one, worked fine for a few months. Now that one decided to do the same thing. Called a service rep, he came out and had no idea what the problem was and... best part... didn't have a new 8300 to give us. Tells the wife to head into a TW office to get a new one (gee thanks).
So my wife heads up to Saratoga with box in tow to find out... they don't have any either, and give her an old 8000 as a replacement.
I continue to be amazed at TW's incredibly terrible customer service.

There are no firewire ports on my 8300 DVR. I read somewhere that if you require firewire, TWC will give you a 3250 box (no dvr) with them. According to the SciAtl website, the 8300 does have the ability to be manufactured with firewire ports, but it is a cable co. selected option. Apparently, TWC choose not to have firewire ports on the DVR's.

Hi all, Have not been around in a while and was wondering what the status of the HDMI is on the 8300. My new Panasonic AE700U LCD FP came today and I want to switch from the SA 8000 to the 8300 if the HDMI is working. I need to order a 45' HDMI from pccables if it is and am going to have spend about $100 to get it.
TIA, Kurt

I was trying to use a HDMI to DVI cable, and that doesn't seem to work. I don't know if it is my TV or the 8300.

DOes everyone get dropouts when watching a recorded show on the 8300 HD DVR? Especially 1808 (FOX HDTV).
