Is there any other benefit to running in passthrough other than being able to use my tv's built in stretch options? Does the 480i or 480p look better rather than leaving as is now where every signal is recognized as 1080i to my tv?

I personally think the TV handles the upconversion of the signal better than the box. If the TV upconverts the signal to make it cleaner, then it's best to do that. I also think overscan is more true with a SD pic than a HD-converted SD pic.

It really depends on your display and what looks better to you . I keep all of my signals coming from my hdtv box in 1080i just for convenience and simplicity . I did try changing the scan rates and on my display there wasn't much difference. Some tvs can display 480p without any upscaling like the mits tvs some upconvert all signals to 540p like the toshibas and the hitachis and some display all content at 1080i such as the jvcs and a few others. it really depends on what YOUR tv does to the signal once it sees it.

The Toshibas also have a feature called "Auto-Aspect" which, if enabled will automatically stretch 480i signals to a stretch mode you select.
I have my 8300HD DVR set to Pass Through. I can not stretch HD signals with my Toshiba, but can stretch SD signals. HD signals can be zoomed or stretched by pressing # on the DVR's remote.

as a reply to old matador's post earlier in this thread about the guy watching what was obviously not hdtv for months and not complaining ..You have to realize that most people this guy included depend on places like Time Warner to do a job correctly and most of them just assume that it has been done correctly . As far as the picture quality in best buy or circuit city is concerned I have never seen a hdtv look good in any of those stores. Overly bright blooming pictures with cartoony color does not a good picture make . His tv is a panasonic that he bought from BJ's warehouse when he retired . He didn't even have his dvd player output for a 16:9 screen it was stretched 4:3. Time warner charges ALOT of money for their service and the least they can do is send somebody who can hook up the equipment right . Most consumers buying digital sets have no idea what they are doing or how to properly use them. They have no idea what the differences between composite, component ,s-video,rf,dvi ,hdmi are . Have you ever called time warner and asked some very basic questions ? They have no answers . Their only answer is the requisite "We'll send somebody out " . Needless to say after he got off the phone with them they credited his digital tier bill for 6 months .

Needless to say after he got off the phone with them they credited his digital tier bill for 6 months . I agree with everything you say in your post. TWC's inept customer service reps were the driving force behind the creation of this site. Most of the time they don't know the answer to your question, and when they do have a reply, it is usually wrong. I have documented this several times in the forum. The one exception to this is Mike from TWC at x-4039. He has worked with me several times to correct some problems and has gone beyond what I have come to expect from TWC CSR's. Now, if he could only get my HDMI to DVI connection to work. BTW, I ordered a cable from Pacific Cable and it should arrive today. I'll let you know if it works or not.

Quick question...
I'm about to take the leap and buy a new HDTV. Most likely the Toshiba 34HFX84. This TV has component and HDMI, no DVI inputs. I've been doing some reading and I have a few questions:
1. Does the DVI port work on the SA8000HD? 2. Does the HDMI port work on the SA8300HD? 3. Which box is available to me in my area (Pittsfield, MA) 4. Can I drive to any other TWC location to swap my box, not just the one in my town? 5. Do people have a preference of cable box w/PVR for HD?
I just got off the phone with someone at TWC who didn't really know like she knew what I was talking about. She said that the DVI/HDMI ports are not working yet. But I'm pretty sure that I've read on this thread, and other boards that they are in fact working. Is there anyone here in the berkshires (or Capital region) that is using a DVI or HDMI connection?
Any info would be helpful! Thanks.

I'll answer the questions I have an answer for: 1. Does the DVI port work on the SA8000HD? Yes. 2. Does the HDMI port work on the SA8300HD?

Yeah, I've still never had it work even for a minute. I have a DVI cable with a HDMI adapter, it worked on my parents 47" panasonic with the 3250 box, but not on my setup.

Does this mean that the DVI port on the 8000 works with some TVs, but not others? -Michael Nope. I ordered a new HDMI to DVI cable from Pacific Cables and that didn't work either. Very Frustrating.

Anyone else been having problems with their on-demand channels with the 8300? Every time I select a show to watch it gives me the "Your feature will begin shortly" page, then after a few minutes it just says "Error 113" and the show never begins.
Any ideas?

I had the same problem with my first cable box. I had a TW tech come out and he traced the problem to a weak cable signal, which was due to a cheap Rat Shack splitter I was using in my basement. He replaced the splitter, installed a line amp (all at no additional charge) and everything has worked properly since. Give TWC a call and schedule a service call. It is included as part of your cable bill, so why not use there services? Post back with the results.

I will, thanks.
Interestingly this worked fine with previous DVRs, but I had to get a new 8300 after my last one stopped recording things, and now on demand things don't work...
