Well that makes sense, no need to give the people something for nothing. That's always the story with these guys these days it seems.

That's good, although I already enjoy 100 HD in Albany with 130HD going live August 14th, 150 by the end of the year and 200 national HD promised by the time this is supposed to come around here--so they have catching up to do for sure.

Hopefully by then they figure out Multi-room DVR *WITH* HD, ditch the Motorola STBs and get many more HD channels because right now their HD channel listing is pathetic considering what they claim is cutting-edge technology.

DIRECTV Remains Clear HD Leader With 130 HD channels on Tap For Mid-August DIRECTV Adding More Than 30 New HD Channels and is First To Offer All HD Programming in MPEG-4 AVC and Dolby Digital; Will offer HD Movies in 1080p Later This Year
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 28, 2007 - DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television service provider, continues to dominate the HD landscape by delivering significantly more quality national HD channels than any other television provider in the nation via the most advanced technology. Beginning August 14, DIRECTV will launch more than 30 additional HD channels, bringing the total HD channel lineup to 130.
DIRECTV will also transmit all of its HD programming in the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding standard, by the end of this month - the first to do so in the industry. All HD programming will also be available in the Dolby Digital audio format, and later this year, DIRECTV will begin offering movies in 1080p, the highest resolution format available for HD video enthusiasts and the same format used by Blu-Ray HD DVDs.
Among the new HD channels that DIRECTV will launch next month are Showtime Extreme HD, Showtime Showcase HD, Planet Green HD, ABC Family HD, additional DIRECTV HD pay per view channels and an additional 23 Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) in HD 24 hours a day.
"Despite all the sound and fury of confusing HD claims from our competitors, our customers understand that DIRECTV is the destination for the most compelling and complete lineup of HD content," said Derek Chang, executive vice president, Content Strategy and Development, DIRECTV, Inc. "Our message is clear - DIRECTV is the content leader, and our delivery of the best quality HD via the most advanced technology is one way we continue to dominate this category and offer our more than 17 million customers nationwide an unparalleled entertainment experience."
In addition to its full lineup of linear HD channels, DIRECTV continues to lead the industry with the most sports HD programming available, by broadcasting exclusive, interactive sports packages like NFL SUNDAY TICKET™, NCAA® MEGA MARCH MADNESS™ and NASCAR HOTPASS™ all in crystal-clear HD. DIRECTV will also continue to add HD content to its newly launched DIRECTV on Demand platform.
The full DIRECTV HD programming lineup, including the new channels, and details on receiving equipment needed for the new DIRECTV HD services, are available by calling 1-800-DIRECTV or visiting directv.com/hd.
With the DIRECTV 11 satellite now part of the fleet and the launch of the DIRECTV 12 satellite next year, DIRECTV will have the capacity to deliver 200 national HD channels and 1,500 local HD and digital channels in addition to new advanced programming services for customers nationwide.

When it comes to Dish, it seems every bit of good news is always coupled with some bad:
Dish Network’s EchoStar 2 Satellite Fails July 17, 2008
[Satellite Today 07-17-08] Dish Network’s EchoStar 2 satellite “experienced a substantial failure that appears to have rendered the satellite a total loss,” Dish said in a July 14 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. EchoStar 2, launched in September 1996, has been operating at 148° West primarily as a back-up satellite but had provided local network channel service to Alaska and six other small markets, Dish said. All programming and other services were restored to EchoStar 1, the primary satellite at the orbital slot. EchoStar 2 carried a book value of about $6.4 million at the end of June, Dish said.

The "push to DVR" by satellite is a capability I didn't even think of, not an awful way to help compete with cable's on-demand offerings. High-speed internet delivery is intriguing, too, and ironically when used it Road Runner, you're basically using the same idea as Time Warner on their own network to get DIRECTV programming

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- DIRECTV customers are catching Olympic fever early this year via a special video on demand (VOD) Olympics programming package now available on DIRECTV's VOD service, DIRECTV on DEMAND, through an agreement with NBC Universal (NBCU). DIRECTV on DEMAND is a new VOD service that is available to those customers who have the DIRECTV Plus(R) HD DVR or R22 DVR receiver.
As promotion for NBCU's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games (Aug. 8-24, 2008), NBCU is providing DIRECTV with 10 VOD titles each week, including athlete features, Beijing previews, and more. The service will be available through the end of the Olympics in both standard-definition and HD. NBCU will produce more than 500 titles now through the end of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
To access the VOD content, customers with VOD-enabled DVRs can tune to channel 1008 or go to the home of DIRECTV on DEMAND - Channel 1000 - to see highlights of Gold Medal winning performances.
"NBCU's 2008 Beijing Olympic Games content is an exciting addition to our growing DIRECTV on DEMAND lineup and a great opportunity to generate anticipation for the uniquely enhanced Olympic coverage that NBC plans to distribute to the subscribers of DIRECTV this summer," said Eric Shanks, executive vice president, DIRECTV Entertainment.
"Our robust On Demand offering for the 2008 Olympic Games is unprecedented and will provide our customers a unique way to access the exciting content from Beijing," said Bridget Baker, president, TV Networks Distribution, NBC Universal.

Still no YES-HD means DIRECTV still wins.

The Albany HD locals have apparently been uplinked by DISH, but are not yet available. Shouldn't be long then. Great, all they'd need now is the YES network to not be totally useless in Albany then I guess.

Defintiely wasn't to make room because they had most of the 22 new channels, and the Voom up for almost 24 hours before they started dropping them.

NOT SO FAST I guess...
They dropped 7 of their "Voom" channels to make room. Looks like they were up there with DirecTV for a whole day.
The ones that "made the cut" are reportedly Monsters, Rush, Equator, Kung Fu, and Rave... whatever the hell those are. That brings them well below 90 again by my count.
Either way, I'd have traded these 22 channels for ALL the Voom channels based on what people say about them.
