Just got an email from Time Warner saying there's a lot of new HD content coming....
Time Warner Cable is working to add a series of new high-definition channels in the near future. Among the HD versions of channels to be added:
• CNN • Food Network • Fox Business News • HGTV • History Channel • Lifetime Movie Network • National Geographic • Outdoor • Versus/Golf • Weather Channel
In addition, there are plans to add more HD versions of more than a half dozen of some of the premium channels that you enjoy, such as Cinemax, HBO, Starz and The Movie Channel.
We'll keep you informed via email, digital cable channel 1 and other means as these channels come on board.
Sounds good to me! Only thing left they'll really need is Discovery and The Learning Channel. Wonder when these will go live?

These will all most likely be Switched Digital Video (SDV). Those who use a TWC issued cable card exclusively will be SOL until the " USB adapter" is released.

I hope these get added before the end of the year. I don't think Time Warner would send out that email if they weren't pretty close to flipping the switch

Now that we are seeing them add the HD channels that are "replacements" for the old SDs (i.e. same programming with the exception of Vs/Golf) hopefully they are smart enough to start using the DirecTV approach and stop using the 18xx channel range... DirecTV just puts the HD version right over the same number as SD... avoiding this worrying ab out whether they are HD or not. As they add more channels I think that becomes more important.

Good to hear we're finally getting some new channels, and some good ones even! I'm especially surprised (and, as a weather geek, happy) about Weather Channel. I haven't seen that mentioned on HD lineups in any Time Warner markets.
Does anyone know if these will be added at the same time for everyone? I'm a former Adelphia subscriber in Queensbury and we still don't have NHL, SD or HD, as far as I know. I don't have the sports tier so I wouldn't get it anyway, but they don't show up on my on-screen guide with the other channels in the sports tier (and other premiums I don't get).

Hey, Scott. My aunt lives in your area and used to be Adelphia cable. She received a message (in a bill from timewarner?) indicating she was getting getting NHLHD by end of 2007. She has a cablecard in her TV and a dvr box. They also sent her a card in the mail about losing some of her HBO channels on her cablecard. This came up on turkey day dinner and have not heard that they got it yet (Uncle is big Bruins fan). I was surprised to see that her cablecard TV still got west coast HBO channels when mine doesnt down in capital district area.
If I talk to them anytime soon I will be sure to ask if they heard more or got the channels. Will post results..

The email I got from Timewarner indicates more HD premium channels as well (more than 1/2 dozen) This would be like 17 or more new HD channels coming to TW then. I'm happy that I can finally watch History, National geo, cnn & weather ch HD!!!!. Might have to sub scribe to more than HBO if Starz gets more than 1 HD ch.

I'll be the party pooper and notice the lack of timeframe. Knowing our local TW, "coming soon" will be like when DirectTV kept saying that Showtime HD was "coming soon". 2.5 years later it DID finally come. Granted, I doubt it'll take them that long but to be quite honest, I highly doubt we'll see all those channels by end of next year. Even with SDV they won't have enough bandwidth to add that many HD channels. I think for every 1 HD channel they have to get rid of like 6 SD channels.

I would tend to agree with hurnik. DirecTV just announced that Local channel HD was coming by mid 08. It may be here by Feb, as it is already in one area that was in the same press release. TW may be trying to slow down customer switching to sat. Only they would know how many people are switching, and it may be enough that they felt they needed to do something. It will be interesting to see how soon the new channels are available.

I think they are ready to go pretty quick on DirecTV... all my local channels disappear and reappeared in the correct order for Albany this week so something is in the works (it used to show MORE than just the Albany locals (neighboring areas too)--now it is "correct" and shows only 6,10,13,17,23,45 and 51)

For what it's worth, I saw on Ch. 1 this morning it showed something about how all of those channels were coming soon.

What exactly does that mean? Those channels will just be switched to SDV to free up bandwidth? Those are the same channels that are going to be added as HD, so does that also mean we will see the HD versions of those channels go live tonight?

Those are the same channels that are going to be added as HD, so does that also mean we will see the HD versions of those channels go live tonight? If this info is accurate, those of us with a digital cable box from TWC will see these channels later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Since the new channels will be using Switched Digital Video technology, those of us with cable card devices (like an HD TiVo) will not be able to view the new channels. Here's an explanation of Switched Digital Video. It's basically a way for cable companies to deliver more channels without having to increase bandwidth, but it requires two-way comunication between the cable box and TWC's head end. Until the reported adapter for cable card users is available, channels using SDV will not be available on cable card equipped devices. Here's a list of the channels on Albany TWC currently using SDV.

Thanks Skaggs, I know what SDV is and does but not a clue how it actually works, but that doesn't really matter. I was just confused if those channels going to SDV also meant the HD networks would be launched at that time as well.
