Verizon Unveils Souped-Up VoIP Phone
Hoping to make cable operators eat its dust, Verizon Communications has developed a souped-up cordless phone that plugs into DSL lines and can double as a wireless router. The device, called Verizon One, integrates a DSL modem, 802.11g wireless router, 5.8 Ghz cordless phone and color touch screen on a single desktop device. Verizon plans to offer the phone to consumer DSL customers by July. No price has yet been set. The device is designed for the company's new iobi home service, which merges phone and online communications into one VoIP-like user interface for $7.95 a month. The Bell has awarded a multi-year manufacturing contract for the device to Westell Technologies.
