After dealing with geometry and color distortions on my 40" Sony XBR set for about the last six months, I'm finally looking to replace it. I've gone ahead and removed anything with tubes from my list (just thought I'd avoid that headache altogether), which leaves me with the digital rear projection technologies.
My question is this: all of Sony's LCD rear projection sets sport a native resolution of 788p-- am I better off feeding such a set a 1080i or 720p signal from my 8000 HD STB (or an upconverting DVD player for that matter)? I don't know if most scalers prefer to upconvert or downconvert. If anyone has an opinion (or better yet, if you own one of these Grand Wegas or, say, a plasma set with an oddball native res), I'm all ears. Thanks--

You would want to send such a display a 720p signal . the display will not show a 1080i signal as 788p is its native scan rate. the time warner box will downconvert all 1080i signals to 720p to be able to be displayed on such a device.

I have an LCD display with a vertical resolution of 768 pixels, and I send everything through the TV and let it scale it. I think a high-end TV will do a better job at scaling an unmatching display resolution than a cable-box, but try it and see. Leave a 1080i signal passed-through automatically, and try converting to 720p on the box, see which looks better to your eye.
