Digital Cable Delivers

Who’s happier with their TV service — satellite or cable TV users? For years, satellite has been tops for satisfaction and cable’s been the service people love to hate. But Consumer Reports’ recent national survey of 1,900 TV-service subscribers shows things are looking up for cable TV. "It works! The Tabs family recently upgraded from analog cable to digital. "I like the fact that we get more channels."
Another feature the Tabs like is video-on-demand. You can pause movies and other programs as you watch. Consumer Reports Mark Kotkin says satellite customers remain happier with their service overall. But the picture for cable has changed significantly. "Cable TV, for a long time, has been one of the lowest rated services in our surveys. But now we're finding a big increase in the percentage of people who are happy with cable TV."
Digital cable, like the Tabs have, is probably a big reason why. Digital cable has much better picture quality and more channels than analog. In fact, digital cable has some features satellite TV doesn't. For one, with digital cable you're sure to get your local channels. And it offers video-on-demand. Another plus — digital cable has more high-definition channels.
All of these features have helped make families like the Tabs much happier with their cable service. Consumer Reports says that although cable TV's satisfaction rates are up, satellite still rates higher for getting the best value for your money. That's in part because cable TV still has persistent rate hikes. Increases for cable "expanded basic" service have gone up by more than 50 percent in the last eight years!
