I am in a region in Columbia County serviced by FairPoint (their site claims to provide service to Niverville, Kinderhook, Valatie, Stuyvesant and Stuyvesant Falls). I found they now offer internet & phone for $85 which is less than I pay now with Time Warner. Does anyone have experience with FairPoint? Specifically, I'm wondering if there are any issues getting the local HDs over QAM with basic cable. I'm guessing there may be few or no folks in this limited area, but I figured I'd check anyway.
At the least I'd like to call up TW and get them to make me an offer not to switch.

I have Fairpoint Comm in Hancock, MA serviced out of Chatham, NY. We have never had any real problems that they didn't resolve fairly quickly. We are paying for 3 Mbps download speed, but the most we have managed is 1.2 Mbps. Cable is probably faster. If you download HD movies or use Sling technology I think you will be better with the cable. We do not have access to Cable here so it is kind of the only game in town. They are OK, but don't expect Cable like speeds on the internet.

Thanks for the info. I'm currently on a TW promotion, but it's good to have options. If anyone has experience with Fairpoint in the Kinderhook area I'd still like to hear about it. I'm guessing the infrastructure supports higher speeds in this area (since Time Warner is also in the area) but haven't really heard from anyone in Columbia County who would have a comparable situation.

For what it's worth our speeds seem to have improved a bit within the last few months. I am not aware of any upgrades they have made, but our download speeds seem to have almost doubled which really helps when downloading larger files.
