The FCC has issued new CableCard regulations that should make it a bit easier for those of us who want to switch over to a Moxi or a Tivo - bad news is they don't take effect until next year (so the cable ops have time to find loopholes) Read More HEREThe Good: (my comments in parenthesis) • CableCARD fees have to be the same for everyone, no matter which package you have. • If your cable company allows any self installs, they must allow CableCARD self-installs. (This has been a huge issue in some divisions IE: Albany, NY)• Cable companies must support SDV for CableCARD users -- this was implied before, now it is black and white. • By default, all new deployments must be M-Cards (unless you actually request a S-Card). • Cable companies can include an IP interface in set-top-boxes leui of a 1394 port. (they would have to activate the Ethernet port on the 4600/8600 boxes)• One way HD boxes without CableCARDs are no longer forbidden and they don't require IP interfaces. • Must support a minimum of FOUR tuners (Most TWC divisions only support two, so this would open up Moxi 3 Tuners and Ceton PC Cards)• Must deduct the cost of a set top rental if included in the package price (TWC includes the first)Read the whole document HERE
