ok im somewhat disappointed with the Samsung SMT-H3270 HD-DVR that I picked up from time warner today, I went in to the Clifton Park, NY location hoping to get a Cisco HD DVR from them, but no luck they only have one Samsung HD DVR one (which is what I have now) and all the old SA ones.
PROS:
- Faster:
Much faster that I expected, Faster that the new Cisco HD Receiver, which is surprising because normally dvr's are slower than normal hd boxes.
- Digital Clock is Dimmer:
This is a minor one, But the digital Clock is NOT extremely bright like the new Cisco boxes, I'm not kidding you the new Cisco boxes LED Clock is small and EXTREMELY bright at night, I had a Cisco Hd receiver in my bedroom and would have trouble sleeping because I would have this odd green color over casting the whole room.
CONS:
- Guide + Info is Strecthed horribly!! :
Navigator is Stretched, and not in proper aspect ratio. Seriously this drives me the most crazy, normally the guide data and info bar on the cisco boxes where in 4:3 format on HD channels, and would only be stretched if it was on a SD channel and picture was stretched. Its easier to read on the Cisco boxes because it keep the guide data and info part correctly formatted. But for some reason on all the samsung boxes that time warner has the guide, and info bar is stretched to the whole screen no matter what settings you have on, it makes the titles of shows blurry, and tv logos blurry. Which is just plan ugly!!!!!
- NO PICTURE-IN-PICTURE!!:
Another big con!! Guess what NO Picture-In-Picture on the Samsung HD-DVR. Time warner screwed up big time on this one, I mean what the hell! most HDTV's don't have this feature anymore because most homes have a Digital Receiver from a cable or satellite company, making it useless on hdtv's, but the feature is no where to be found on this samsung hd-dvr, When I called time warner about this issue they said it was a Hardware problem, on other DVR'S you normally have Two Coaxial IN's, but this samsung one only has only one. This was a big disappointment, especially when your watching baseball or football games now you have to keep flipping back and forth waiting for the commercials to end. So this feature will never come to this model, hardware can't handle it.
Final Thoughts:
If your looking to exchange your HD-DVR from Time Warner for a faster one and you don't ever use the Pciture-IN-Picture feature on your current HD-DVR then go for this one, you will be more than satisfied with it's quick snappiness compared to the other boxes. I give it a 7.5/10
