Doctors: 3D TV Can Make You Sick; Ugly Sick

Washington, D.C. (April 26, 2010) -- Samsung and LG recently issued quiet advisories that watching 3D TV at home can cause some people to get sick.
The statements have been met with a mixture of amusement and alarm by journalists and pundits. However, CNN reports that medical doctors say the issue is serious, particularly for viewers who have sensitive stomachs such as children and pregnant women.
Steven Nusinowitz, an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles, tells CNN that 3D glasses have a polarized filter that separate two images, thereby enabling the 3D effect.
However, the doctor adds that the separation occurs so quickly that your brain may have difficulty accepting it.
"The movie is telling you 'Hey, I'm moving around in this scene,' but your vestibular system is telling you, 'I'm not moving anywhere,' and that disconnect will make you feel sick, for some people," Nusinowitz said.
The doctor estimates that only about 20 percent of viewers will get sick when watching 3D, but that's a large percentage if you're trying to market a new product. If 1 in 5 people get sick, at least one family member could be unable to watch 3D TV.
Nusinowitz says he's one of the five, too, because his prescription glasses have different prescriptions in each lens.
Dr. Norman Saffra, director of ophthalmology at Maimonides Medical Center in New York, tells CNN that viewers can get sick after watching 3D, too. He said taking the 3D glasses off can leave you with a disorienting feeling.
And Dr. Lisa Park of the New York University Langone Medical Center said watching 3D can cause people to have headaches and nausea because it forces you to move your eyes in an unnatural way.
Samsung and Panasonic are now selling 3D HDTVs at retail, but the companies have not commented on their effect other than issue the medical advisories at their web sites and in manuals.
