TiVo Sues Verizon and AT&TTVPredictions.com (August 27, 2009) -- TiVo has filed DVR patent infringement lawsuits against TV providers AT&T and Verizon. The company filed the lawsuits in the Eastern District of Texas, the same circuit where it filed a similar lawsuit against Dish Network. The latter case is still pending a final resolution, although a Texas jury ruled in TiVo's favor and Dish has been forced to pay TiVo more than $100 in legal damages. TiVo CEO Tom Rogers yesterday said the company has filed lawsuits against satellite and telco companies in part because negotiations with cable operators are doing well. Comcast is expected to begin offering TiVo features nationwide in the coming months and Cox is testing the service. TiVo also said yesterday that it lost 139,000 subscribers in the second quarter, bringing its overall total to 3.2 million. However, it said DIRECTV is still planning to offer a TiVo HD DVR, most likely in early 2010. "The new DIRECTV TiVo HD DVR remains on track for its rollout and, as we stated previously, once launched, it will be immediately accessible to DIRECTV's entire national customer base," the company said in a statement.
