I am setting up my grandparents with internet (roadrunner). I am trying to figure out the best placement for the cable modem next to tv or computer.
Does anyone know what basic channels they will receive in the clear with just RR, other than CBS, NBC & FOX?

I don't think you get any channels in the clear with RR because RR runs on a certain frequency of the cable line. But I could be wrong, I've never tried it.

Another AlbanyHDTV member has previously confirmed you get basic cable (including the QAM HD channels) with a RR only subscription.

Does that basic cable include TW channel 9?
The reason is, that is the only channel they want for local news and I didn't want them paying extra for the basic package if they can receive it already with rr.

Not exactly. They will come out and "trap" your line, I have a friend with DIRECTV and cable-modem only service. You basically end up with channels that are very fuzzy, but around 50-75 they start to come in clear. Cable modem data is in the 75-90 range which is why there are no analogs there, and why they can't trap around there.
That said, if you have a decent QAM tuner, you'll get a lot of the local HD channels with it because they are in the higher numbers, and strong enough in most cases to tune in and obviuosly not fuzzy like analog would be.
Fortunately, MPEG-4 HD on DIRECTV looks much better than the clear-QAM stuff anyway so it doesn't matter, but we have hooked it up before to verify.

I can confirm that with RoadRunner-Only I get very fuzzy analog Channels 70-78. The first 3 in that range are too snowy to watch most of the time. Digitally, I get everything you can get OTA that TWC carries except Universal Sports (45-2) and MyTV4 (51-1). You also get a crapload of TWC/OnDemand/AOL Music Self-Promotion channels and the New York State Legislature Channel.

Initially, right after the auto-scan, you may get some other channels too, but very shortly the digital encryption bullet hits it and it no longer comes in. Being that auto scan takes a ridiculously long time, I find the surprise bonus channels not worth the lengthy wait... And the fact that it's usually some channel I couldn't care less about.

Unlike the other locals there is no name mapped so it is easy to overlook.

I'm not able to get 98-9 in the clear. Unless this is something that changed in the last few weeks since I've performed an auto scan.
