I purchased an iPod Touch a few weeks ago and, after a little online research, determined how to copy a standard DVD movie to my iPod Touch using FREE software. Here are step-by-step instructions:
1. Download & install DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0 from: www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/
2. Download & install Handbrake version 0.9.3 from: handbrake.fr/
3. Run DVD Decrypter program
4. Place the DVD you want to copy onto your ipod Touch or iPhone into your computer’s DVD drive.
5. Select your computer’s DVD drive in the SOURCE drop down menu.
6. Click the folder icon in the DESTINATION portion, next to “Please select a folder” and select a folder on your computer’s hard drive where you want to store the decrypted files. (I find it best to create a new folder with the name of the movie.)
7. Click the DVD to hard drive logo t start de-crypting the DVD. A standard DVD will take 20-30 minutes.
8. When DVD Decrypter is complete, close the program and open Handbrake.
9. Click the iPhone & iPod Touch PRESET once on the right side of the screen.
10. Click the SOURCE button on the top left of the screen, select DVD /VIDEO_TS, and then select the folder you created in #6 above.
11. Click the BROWSE button next to the DESTINATION box and select a location on your hard drive where you want to store the finished movie. You will also need to name the file.
12. Select the VIDEO TAB in the bottom box and under ADVANCED ENCODING SETTINGS, select both 2-PASS ENCODING and TURBO FIRST PASS.
13. Click the START button. A separate window will open that shows the progress of the encoding process. It may take 8 hours or more to complete the process. I usually let it run overnight or while I’m at work.
14. When the encoding is complete in Handbrake, close the Handbrake program and open iTunes.
15. In iTunes, select FILE>Add File to Library. Select the file you created in #11 above. iTunes will add the movie to your iTunes library under MOVIES. You can now drag & drop the movie from iTunes onto your iPod Touch or iPhone. Done.
