Note: I called TWC Albany and was informed that they do support Tru2way. The guy was surprised that I was able to buy a tv that supported it though. I actually have yet to make the purchase I informed him since I wanted to verify the technology is live prior to shelling out $$. Panasonic appears to be the first CE co to release Tru2way sets. TH-42PZ80Q and its 50" big bro are being sold by abt electronics. www.abt.com/product/37817/Panasonic-TH42PZ80Q.html. I think I will wait till someone sells this locally prior to buying so PQ can be viewed in person.

tru2way retail tv MOU July 1st deadline

Ready to plug in that tru2way TV set you’ve got sitting in your living room? Yeah, probably not.

Today is the day that many of the large cable operators agreed to be ready to support tru2way-enabled CE devices. In a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last year with major CE companies, the cablecos agreed to support tru2way so that retail devices could be plugged in to a cable network and receive two-way services – not just downstream video delivery, but also upstream services like VOD. Unfortunately, operators haven’t quite met the deadline. Support is improving, but it’s not nearly at 100%.

The fallout from missing the deadline isn’t as bad as you might expect. The consumer electronics industry grudgingly admits that cable has been making a good-faith effort, and everything I hear suggests that cable companies really are making progress. Further network support is delayed, but only by a matter of months in many cases.

There’s also the little fact that there aren’t many tru2way devices available at retail anyway. In a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma, the CE industry has waited for network readiness to bring new products to market. Meanwhile with few products out, there was little incentive (before the MOU) to prep cable networks to support them.

In short, today’s deadline – missed or not – isn’t a huge deal. But look for a big retail tru2way push at CES 2010.

Although you wouldn't know it from the big press events at CES, tru2way is still on track for mass deployment and July 1st is the big day. The six biggest MSOs, signed on to that date some time ago -- it should be noted that Verizon still hates the idea -- and both Time Warner Cable and Comcast are proud to re-iterate that it's actually going to happen. Ten of TWC's 22 divisions have already deployed tru2way boxes -- no 3rd party device support yet -- which is about half of its customers. Comcast has already started supporting 3rd party tru2way boxes in Chicago and Denver back in October and also expects to have every market ready by July. The MSOs also agreed -- in the same Memorandum of Understanding -- that by July, 20% of its own new boxes would be using tru2way as well. So while it appears the MSOs will be ready for tru2way in 2009, based on the announcements at CES, we'll all have to wait until 2010 before we really see the TV manufacturers fulfill their end of the deal.
