While corresponding with WNYT's Chief Engineer Rich Klein, he informed me that WNYT expects to provide syndicated HD programs near the end of 2009:

They're no more behind the curve than WXXA, which still doesn't broadcast HD syndication either (unless they've started to recently). I wonder if they're waiting for this sytem to launch before airing syndicated stuff in HD. That's supposed to be cheaper for stations than current systems.

I wonder if they're waiting for this sytem to launch before airing syndicated stuff in HD. That's supposed to be cheaper for stations than current systems. Not entirely. That is a distribution platform for capturing programming that you then transfer to your playout servers. It might be part of a solution, but so far only Warner Bros and CBS Television Distribution programs would be sent this way. You might still need HD satellite receivers to record programming from other distributors. WNYT apparently still needs to upgrade their MC switching and playout servers as well.

They don't really have much of a reason to go to HD. They consistently win in the local news ratings even without HD (I think their news is boring, outdated and dry) so why make the investment when you don't have to?
