By Phillip Swann, tvpredictions.com Toshiba plans to cut the price of its low-end HD-DVD player to $399, effective April 1.
That's according to reports by HighDefDigest.com and the AVS Forum.
According to the reports, Toshiba has issued a new catalog saying the HD-A2 model price will drop from $499 to $399 on April 1.
That would make it the lowest price high-def DVD player on the market.
Sony's PlayStation 3, which comes with a Blu-ray HDTV DVD player inside, can be purchased for $499.
Toshiba, the major force behind the HD-DVD format, is under pressure to quickly boost sales with Blu-ray discs outselling HD-DVDs by a 2-1 margin over the last two months.
In addition to the HD-A2 price drop, the company is expected to lower the price on the HD-A20 model from $599 to $499.
Previously, Toshiba lowered the price tag on the HD-XA2, the company's second generation player, to $799 from $999.
Toshiba is also offering five free HD-DVDs with the purchase of any HD-DVD player.
