LG's dual format HDTV DVD player is now on sale at Best Buy and Circuit City.
The player, which retails for $1199, will play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs. LG hopes the device will appeal to consumers concerned about picking the wrong format in the high-def DVD war.
"We have developed the Super Multi Blue Player (Model: BH100) to end the confusion caused by the current competition between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD," said Dr. Hee Gook Lee, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics.
Although the player is listed at BestBuy.com and CircuitCity.com, the former says the high-def player is already sold out. Circuit City seems to be taking orders without restrictions.
LG unveiled the player this month at the Consumer Electronics Show, saying it would be available in February.
Although the player is making its debut, there is already a controversy over its relationship with one of the dueling formats. The LG BH100 is not compatible with the interactive features available in many HD-DVD titles. Consequently, the player can not sport the official HD-DVD logo.
On its web site, CircuitCity.com notes the player's inability to use the HD-DVD interactive features.
"By providing a High-Definition player that supports both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD discs, LG is delivering a product that puts the customer first," Randy Wick, Circuit City's senior vice president, said earlier this month. "We applaud the LG customer-friendly approach, as it will serve to alleviate customers' confusion about the two formats."
