BofA, Red Sox team up to beam games to cinemas

By Jesse Noyes, Boston Herald
The Red Sox are coming to more theaters near you. Bank of America announced plans yesterday to sponsor high-definition cinema broadcasts of Sox games, cutting a deal with National Amusements' Showcase Cinemas and New England Sports Network. The arrangement will add four theaters and two Sox-Yankees outings this season to the broadcasts, which began two years ago at Randolph's Showcase Cinemas. Movie-style broadcasts of Sox games picked up popularity in 2004, with Revere, Worcester and Providence, R.I., theaters joining the action. At $7 a ticket ($10 for Yankees games), catching a match at the theater can be a less expensive alternative to Fenway Park. This season, nine Showcase theaters will broadcast Sox games. Under yesterday's deal, BofA will bear some of the program's costs. Red Sox spokesman Doug Bailey said the bank's sponsorship means the broadcasts have achieved permanence. He added that the Sox expect to add even more theaters to the program in the future.
