The Swanni Awards!
The Best Show in HDTV!
Which program best combines the brilliant picture of
High-Definition TV with great entertainment?
By Phillip Swann
Editor's Note: In tribute to this month's Oscars, TVPredictions.com is presenting
the 'Swannis!" -- awards for outstanding achievement in TV technology. Between
now and Feb. 27, the night of the Oscars, we will issue awards for everything from
best HDTV show to best innovation to best TV commercial. Today, we issue our
first award -- for the best show in High-Definition TV.
Washington, D.C. (February 3) -- High-Definition TV, which offers a picture six
times clearer than regular television, is dramatically changing the way we watch television. The picture is so realistic that it sometimes makes us feel like we are there. The effect is enhancing the viewing experience in a way unseen since the advent of color television in the 1950s.
However, some gorgeous-looking HDTV programs are not particularly entertaining; despite the great picture, they get boring after awhile. Similarly, many HDTV-produced shows on the major networks are high on entertainment value but short on picture quality.
So, for our first Swanni award, which program best combines the brilliant picture of High-Definition TV along with great entertainment? Here are the nominees:
Sunrise Earth
Discovery HD Theater, weekdays at 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET; also airs at other times.
ABC Monday Night Football
ABC, Mondays at 9 p.m. ET during the football season.
Bikini Destinations
HDNet, Mondays at 10 p.m. ET; also airs at other times.
Live from the Red Carpet
INHD, airs on the day of a major award show, such as the Oscars.
The NFL on CBS
CBS, Sundays during football season.
And the winner is...
ABC Monday Night Football!
This was a tough decision. All five shows are eye-popping as well as entertaining as
hell. For instance, Sunrise Earth, which offers a high-def look at the early morning
hours at various locales, is hypnotic in its simplicity and beauty. And speaking of
beauty, HDNet's Bikini Destinations, which features some of the world's most
attractive women rolling around in bikinis on sandy beaches, has to be seen to be
believed. The Live from the Red Carpet shows, which are co-produced by E!
Entertainment and INHD, is like getting a sneak peek behind the curtains. The
program offers up-close and often unforgiving looks at actors and actresses as they
make their way into the awards show.
But ABC's Monday Night Football has it all. The picture quality is outstanding. It's
so good that you can also almost read the plays on Pittsburgh quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger's wristband. The match-ups, which are picked by ABC and the NFL
with great care, are usually highly competitive. And Al Michaels and John Madden
make up the best team in sports broadcasting.
So, our first Swanni award goes to ABC Monday Night Football!
