Level 3 Aids DirecTV’s HDTV Efforts

Level 3 Communications Inc. is expanding its national backbone deal with DirecTV Inc. to include transport of local HDTV signals.
The initial plans call for Level 3 to send local-TV-station HD signals to DirecTV’s national headend facility in Castle Rock, Colo., from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
DirecTV plans to use Level 3’s backbone and co-location facilities in 15 additional markets.
