For $9.95 (basic cable) can I receive ALL the non-HD Tier HD channels? Locals, TNT HD, INHD-1, INHD-2, and Discovery HD I was under the impression that in order to receive the "non-hd TIER" HD channels (all of them) that TW made you sub to Digital Cable which is $45/month (plus cost of converter box). Then, if you want the HD Tier, it's another $3.95/month I see Turboliner posted that if you just sub to basic (9.95/month) you get the LOCALS in HD, but what about the others that non-HD Tier? The two INHD channels are part of TWC's HD Tier and requires a monthly fee of $3.95 per month. I have started a new thread on CableCards here. Please post CableCard specific issues in the CableCard thread, as this started as a Universal HD thread. MasterFX1 stated in a previous post of this thread:

Locals, TNT HD, INHD-1, INHD-2, and Discovery HD Sorry to extend an off-topic post, but I can't create new threads and this is off-topic for the new CableCard thread as well. I have TWC Basic ($12/month). Hurnik is apparently in a different area and might have a slightly different lineup. I don't have a cable STB or CableCard, or a subscription to anything other than Basic. I have two receivers that handle clear (unscrambled) QAM: LG LST-3410A and MyHD MDP-130 PCI card. I get the following locals: WRGB-HD WTEN-HD WNYT-HD WMHT-HD WXXA-HD WNYT-SD WRNN-SD WRGB Doppler Radar WTEN Weather Loop WEWB-HD and WNYA-SD are not available on TWC. Also, WXXA-HD is available only on cable, not OTA, although that should change soon. I also get several advertising channels, mostly for various On-Demand services. Occasionally I see other channels in the clear, but never anything to get excited about. Lately they include NBA-TV, Discovery Health and Boomerang. The LG can tune Discovery Health but the MyHD cannot. There's no audio on Boomerang on the LG, but it's there on the MyHD. But any of those extra channels may go away at any time. When I read that Universal HD had been added I looked for it in hopes it wasn't scrambled yet, but no such luck. TWC doesn't even unscramble the premium movie channels like HBO and Showtime during free promotional periods; apparently they just authorize them on all their STBs. Most of the locals are on two major channels: WRGB-HD, WMHT-HD and WNYT-SD on 104 and WXXA-HD, WNYT-HD and WTEN-HD on 105. Since the MyHD card can optionally record the entire transport stream, I could record simultaneous shows on Fox, NBC and ABC, and choose the show to watch on playback. Same with CBS and PBS, with the SD version of NBC coming along for the ride.

You sure about the INHD?
I'm 99% sure I get the INHD-1 and INHD-2 and I know I'm not paying the extra $3.95 (those are the channels that the "In Theaters" show is on, yes?)
Those are diff. than the HDNET channels which DO require the $3.95. If I'm correct.
As for MasterFX1's post, that doesn't really answer the question. Yes, TW lets you receive those channels without paying the $3.95 extra for the HD Tier.
But MY question was, do you ALSO have to sub to Digital Cable AND the "basic+standard" (ie, the $45/month deal).
I guess I'll have to call them and see what it is.

When you call TW customer rep for info don't give them your account or phone number, if you do, you will lose INHD-1 and INHD-2. I was receiving both without paying for the HD tier...when I called for something unrelated...they yanked the channels... I ended up paying the $3.95 for the HD Tier.

But MY question was, do you ALSO have to sub to Digital Cable AND the "basic+standard" (ie, the $45/month deal). By law, cable services have to provide a Broadcast Basic package. And if local full-power stations are providing digital or HD, then TWC has to include those newer signals as part of the basic package. BUT, you will have to rent either a CableCard or HD-STB on top of the broadcast basic package. You do NOT have to subscribe to the digital tier. You may need to insist, and ask to speak to a supervisor to get this, but by law, they have to offer it. Now if you choose to go this route... I believe that they currently allow these customers to also receive DiscoveryHD and TNT-HD, although there is no obligation for them to do so. I'm wondering if anyone out there has managed to get Basic+CableCard/HD-STB+HD Tier without having to subscribe to the standard or digital tiers. (Total bill around $19/mo).

Thanks. Guess I lucked out like dkennedy. Although with Universal HD I'll probably sub to it anyway for $3.95 I gotta look at their website though to see when they'll show BattleStar Galactica and Stargate stuff. I think they also show USA (4400 and Dead Zone) too. You sure about the INHD? I'm 99% sure I get the INHD-1 and INHD-2 and I know I'm not paying the extra $3.95. i honestly can"t figure out what all the excitement is about with Universal HD, look at the schedule, its boring and the same block of old shows day, after day, after day. Who would pay $3.95 per month for this station and the other sports packed stations ? To make matters worse most of these stations have commercials!!! For someone that is not into sports or old re-runs, the selection of HD on Time Warner Cable is truly a rip off. Wise up Time Warner, when Verizon comes available in my area, your overpriced limited services and your poorly informed call center will be HISTORY!!!!!!

If you're a SCIFI and a Sports nut like I am, you'll appreciate watching the new BattleStar Galactica in HD on Universal HD and sports in HD.
I agree thou, for those not interested in sports there isn't much value to having the HD/SD sport channels. And the current UHD program offerings are surprisingly pathetic, considering all the marketing they do.

Channels 1827 and 1837 have a subscription status according to my 8300hd. Since these are included in the standard tier of channels they are probably authorized only if you subscribe to that standard tier. Chs 1806-1813 are clear to air and available to anyone with a STB or cablecard and basic cable subscription. The hdprem tier can be added if someone subscribes to standard cable.
masterfx1"By law, cable services have to provide a Broadcast Basic package. And if local full-power stations are providing digital or HD, then TWC has to include those newer signals as part of the basic package"
The FCC and congress have been debating this issue over the past few years. Currently there are no laws forcing digital OTA must carry on cable or satellite. This is evident with the wewb feed being available OTA only but not on TWC. Cable providers were delicate in opening up 3MHz of their spectrum for the local affliate to have full access to multicast video/audio/ppv/data or what ever they wanted.

Turboliner: "Currently there are no laws forcing digital OTA must carry on cable or satellite. This is evident with the wewb feed being available OTA only but not on TWC."
Cable providers do not have to carry a digital signal AND an analog signal from local braodcasters. They do have to carry one of their signals. Once the analog frequency is given back, you're virtually left with a digital must-carry. (This is not a multicast-must-carry). WEWB is not on TWC because the two sides cannot agree on terms. Broadcast networks really do not need must-carry since cable lineups would look rather weak without NBC, CBS, FOX and ABC. Must-carry laws protect little stations with little programming budgets... like pax or low-power stations.
Most broadcast affiliates waive their must-carry rights in favor of a retransmission agreement where some sort of compensation is made.
