It has been a while since I played around with STB's. On these 4250's when I tune an HD SDV channel it pauses on the screen like it is locked up, so I end up clicking the next channel up and then down again to tune it. Is this normal for these boxes? This happens on all 4 boxes I have.

I'd called TW about possibly the same issue, regarding a picture freeze (usually it happens to me on ESPN HD and TNT HD, which aren't SDV). A tech supervisor said it's a software issue with the 4250HDC, and SA had provided a fix a few weeks ago which didn't work. He said it's out of TW's hands at the moment, but they're aware of the problem.

Why exactly do you have the 4250 box? Just get the 8000HD or 8300HD!

So the only option Time Warner gave you was to get the crappy 4250s?

4250HDC was the only option.

As opposed to the crappy 8300HD DVR. The one that randomly deletes stuff on you and doesn't record shows all the way and that can't do "season pass-first runs only" (although the software exists, but TW doesn't implement it here, but they do in SC

First off, very nice and infromative site, Thank You. I havent had any problems w/ my 8300HD Dvr, but what is 'season pass- firsr runs', does that skip previously airred epsiodes? If so I just make sure when I set up a recording I tell it to record in the particular time slot the "new" epsiode is on.

I just make sure when I set up a recording I tell it to record in the particular time slot the "new" epsiode is on. Here's an example: American Idol is on Tuesday, Wednesday, and now Thursday. With the 8300 DVR, you have to set up recordings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for a certain time slot. With a TiVo, you set a "season pass" for American Idol and tell it to record only new episodes.
2nd part of example: American Idol has a special one-time-only Monday episode. With the 8300 DVR, you have to remember to schedule another recording for Monday at the special time. With a TiVo, you don't have to do a thing...it will record the special monday episode.
I had the 8300 DVR and I experienced the same problems Hurnik mentioned....skipping recordings, deleting recordings, etc. The TiVo has a much more user friendly interface and has a ton more capability in terms of moving content to another media (TiVo-To-Go).

I've had ReplayTVs and now use Media Center and taken for granted from day one that you just type in "Lost" and say "Record Series, First Runs" and they can move the show to Wednesday--I don't care. They can have late golf coverage move it an hour, I don't care. They can play a re-run in the time slot, I don't care. The TW DVR is JUNK. And for those of you who had ReplayTV 5000s, and now use Media Center, just so you know I'm still automatically skippping commericals, too

I think I now understand the venom directed toward the SA-8300 HD by some, and the 'no problems here' experienced by others. I fall into the latter category, and I think it's because I've never done anything except manually set all my shows to record each day. I'm too paranoid to trust the box to get it right more than one week at a time, and I've never been burned as a result. So, if you're not used to anything else I believe the TWC STB works just fine. I've even got an external 500 GB HD hooked up to one of my boxes. But if you're used to the user-friendliness of Tivo or its brethren I can see why you think TWC STBs suck big time.

I'd agree with most of that statement. Although one of the guys I work with who's never had a Tivo has the 8300HD DVR and it keeps deleting his recorded shows, his scheduled recordings, and constantly reboots itself.
Although he did find out that when it shows "nothing scheduled", he's able to reboot the DVR and then magically everything is back to normal.
Now, the DVR itself isn't quite crap (except it has the loudest hard drive I've EVER heard. Sounds like a lawnmower mowing up pine cones).
It's the software that TW chose to use and the features that our local TW chose to implement. The SARA software TW chose to use has the ability to do "first run" season passes. But TW Albany has refused to implement this (it's been able to do that for over a year). Not sure why.
Also, other TW areas have chosen to use the Pioneer software instead of SARA, which, from the AVS Forums, sounds MUCH better than SARA. But I've never seen it of course.

If I remember correctly, and I may not, from avs forum, the reason our TWC uses SARA is the following. Passport, which I believe is the Pioneer software, does not support SDV. Navigator, which is TWC's internally developed software, and will eventually(years not months AFAIK) be used by every division. However, it is only in limited areas because, while it has the nicest interface, and supports SDV, is even more buggy than SARA.

Is there a better HD (non-DVR) box than this crappy 4250?
I just replaced the box for the 3rd time and heck, I get so much pixelation on the HD channels that I constantly switch over to the digital channel.
This is definitely not worth the aggravation for SDV!
This reminds me of my Dish days during bad weather!!!

I've had pixelation on some SDV channels, as well. Starz, History Channel, and A&E come to mind.
I have a 8300HD DVR with the DVR features disabled (so I can have an HDMI connection). After I got my TiVos, I went to TWC to trade in my DVR. She asked if I needed HDMI and I told her yes. She was out of 4250's, so she told me to keep the 8300 and removed the DVR charges (I'm paying the same as if I had the 4250).
