I currently have TWC . Quite honestly, the only good thing in HD that they have is their HD DVR. However ,I'm getting tired of waiting for a decent selection of HD channels from which to choose. From what I've read it doesn't seen like Wrgb or Wnyt will be seen on TWC in the forseeable future. The only reason TNT was added is because Time Warner owns the station. TNT's addition has been a major disapointment in my opinion. I'd rather watch a 4:3 picture than the stretched out fare they give us. I've considered purchasing a high def receiver and antenna. However for the $400 or so outlay to receive a few local stations seems exhorbitant. Can anyone tell me the plusses and minuses of Directv and Voom? Can you receive local HD feeds through their HD receivers?Do WTEN and and WXXA currently send out an OTA HD signal? Any information to direct me would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet will be Voom. You get something like 30 HD channels plus they provide you with an antenna to pick-up OTA local HD channels which are WRGB, WNYT, PBS & WB. WTEN & FOX shouldn't be far behind. Voom just added ESPN also.

VOOM is now up to 36 HD channels plus the local OTA HD integrated through the same STB. They will give you the hardware for $9.95 a month or you can buy it outright for $500.
The only downside I've run into with VOOM is that they require a Home phone line... Wireless phones won't work. You can use a Vonage (Broadband) phone, but not a Wireless phone. Unlike DirecTV and DISH, the VOOM STB calls an 800 number everyday to verify the STB's physical location. If the phone line is not properly installed, your STB will shut off.
