Digeo today said it will begin selling its Moxi HD DVR at retail, but did not reveal any pricing structure. The retail set-top is expected to be available in the second half of the year.
The company will compete with TiVo and satellite operators for the retail HD DVR market.
The Moxi recorder was once only available via a subscription to select cable operators. However, Digeo says the retail venture is part of a "comprehensive new strategic direction."
The company also hopes to license the Moxi technology to consumer electronics manufacturers to include in high-def sets and other products.
Digeo this week is exhibiting two new Moxi-based HD "Digital Media Recorders" at the Consumer Electronics Show.
“In the past, we have offered the Moxi technology to people exclusively through our cable operator partners. The proliferation of HD devices and programming, the growing abundance of digital content, and the increasingly sophisticated expectations of consumers make this a perfect time to offer Moxi more broadly," says Mike Fidler, Digeo's CEO.
In addition to the new retail and CE licensing ventures, Digeo will continue to provide the Moxi recorder to cable operators as part of their service. The company says Moxi is now in 400,000 homes nationwide.
"Our cable operator-customers have already experienced the business benefits that come from offering a winning combination of advanced features to consumers,” said Greg Gudorf, Digeo chief operating officer. “Capabilities like multi-room HD recording and the easy-to-use Moxi interface have increased per-customer revenues and reduced churn for cable operators.”
