always leaving the SA 8300HD DVR powered up. I remember reading that it didn't make a difference turning off because the hard drive is always running. Maybe Skaggs could shed some light on that. I've been leaving mine on since they first came to Schenectady TWC. I'm asking this beacuse I was programming some more macros in my universal remote.

I have programmed my Harmony remote to turn the 8300 DVR on & off when my HDTV is turned on & off. If there is a scheduled recording it will record even if the power is turned off.

Thats funny. I was thinking of getting a Harmony 880 today. I'm now using a Home Theater Master MX-500

Technically the drive is always running, however on my 8300HD DVR, when the unit is powered up, the hard drive is noticeably louder than when the unit is "off". You can hear the thing across the 16' room "chugging" away when it's doing something.
I'm returning it today since it's an unrealiable piece of poop anyway, so then I'll have silence.
In regards to the Harmony, they're nice units, but the only thing I really don't like about them is that compared to my Tivo "peanut" remote, the layout sucks. They put the "play/ff/rw" DVR buttons in a bad spot (you can't hold the remote in your hand and simply press the buttons with your thumb). They either put the buttons all the way at the bottom (the Tivo remote has them centered in the middle).

Thtas why I still like my MX-500, transport buttons are all centered.
