I called TWC and spoke to Mary this morning. I asked if TWC has any DVR's besides the Scientific-Atlanta models. She said she had to check and put me on hold.
She came back on the line about a minute later and said, "We only have the PACE HD set top boxes at this time, not the DVRs." I asked if the HD DVR's will be coming in the future, and she replied, "Yes they will, but we don't have an exact date yet."

Here's a photo of the Pace 700 Series DVR: Here's a link to the technical specifications. From what I read in the tech specs, the Pace has a 160 GB hard drive. The Pace's tech specs does state that a larger hard drive is optional.

I wonder which software TWC is running on the PACE DC-551 since it supports both SARA and PASSPORT?

I'd hope it'd be PASSPORT, but since it's "better" than SARA, it'll probably be the crappier SARA software.

I just picked up the Pace 551. I can tell you which software it's running if you tell me what the difference is.
Whatever it is, it appears to be identical to what my Explorer 2100 was running.

When setting a recording of a TV series, the passport software allows you to record "first run episodes only". Do you have this feature?

DUH!!! I had the dvr in mind...
Thanks Skaggs!!!
Well other than that I can't think of anything that would help jonnython identify the software quickly...
Sorry jonnython... gave you the wrong info...I've been living with cablecard too long...

I was a bit confused, but you seemed to know what you were talking about In any case, I'm quite happy with the box, especially since it lets me disable 480i output entirely. My TV (Maxent MX-50X3) has a d**n hard time with 480i for some reason... 480p and up look fantastic. Weird thing is that I get a grainy picture with lots of "mosquitos" when I hook it up using HDMI, but component looks flawless... I guess it's a bum cable, but since HDMI is all-digital I'd expect something that looks much different than what appears to be analog noise. Odd.

I recently wrote to TW and asked them if they had the PACE HD DVR available and I got the following response: (I haven't called yet) The pace converters are available in the Albany area. You can bring your SA8300 to the Albany office to exchange for the new converter. I recommend you call ahead to ensure they are currently in stock. You can call customer service at: 1-866-321-2225 or (518)869-5500 Robert --Customer Care Team Time Warner Cable--Albany Division 1021 Highbridge Rd--Schenectady, NY 12303--1-866-321-2225

So we're stuck with the crappy SA DVR's. Or you can pay $800 for a Series 3 Tivo with no MRV or Tivo To Go. Or wait a year or two or three for Verizon to come alone with service. Sigh (yes, I could switch to satellite and lose my stations every time it rains or snows)
