I called TWC to see how much cheaper it would be to ditch my 8300HD DVR and go with a Cable Card for my new Sony DHG-HDD500 DVR. Here's the charges on my latest bill: Digital Tier: | $2.45 | Digital Navigator | $5.45 | DVR Service Charge | $9.95 | Home Box Office] | $13.95 | Broadcast Basic | $9.10 | Standard Service | $36.25 | HD Premium Tier Service | $3.95 | Hollywood Pack Services | Free | Road Runner Service | $44.95 | Package Discount | -$16.20 | Digital Remote | $0.30 | HD DVR Converter | $7.65 | FCC Mandated Fee | $0.06 | State/local Franchise Fee | $4.09 | TOTAL | $121.95 |

So, I asked to remove the DVR and add a Cable Card, keeping HBO & HD Tier. I thought they would remove: Digital Navigator | $5.45 | DVR Service Charge | $9.95 | Digital Remote | $0.30 | HD DVR Converter | $7.65 | TOTAL | $23.35 |

+add $1.75 for the Cable Card. ...and my total should go down to $100.35, right? WRONG! The TWC rep told me my new bill would be $115.83, which is a saving of only $6.12 a month. When I asked why this was, she responded that since I didn't get have a digital converter box, I did not qualify for the "Digi-Pic" package and I lost the $16.20 package discount. So, I told her to add a regular cable box (so I would qualify for the "Digi-Pic") to the cable card package, and she said my bill would be $116.75, which is a savings of only $5.20. Time Warner has us bent over and is giving it to us up the Hershey Highway. Can't wait for Verizon to come to town to provide some competition. Verizon will be in Guilderland soon. Here's a link to that thread.

Mark - I'm still amazed that they will charge you the digital navigator with CC. I don't get that charge. For $121 I have Digital Cable, Digital Phone, RR, CC, Encore & the HD Tier.
I have to admit coming to TWC from Dish and keeping the lifetime Dish winback discount of $16 is the way to go with TWC, otherwise, they will nickle and dime you to death.

They wouldn't charge me for the Digital Navigator. But, because I would not have a digital cable box, I would not qualify for the digi-pic package discount, and would lose the $16.20 discount. That pretty much wipes away the savings I would reap from ditching their DVR and going with a cable card. You have a good deal for $121.

At least you would have a much better STB/DVR than the Scientific Atlanta model that TWC supplies. I'm not even using mine for cable.

The only problem that I have noticed with the Scientific Atlantic 8300HD DVR is that, when I set it to auto delete the oldest programs when it runs out of space, it deletes everything on the hard drive instead of just the oldest programs.
