Direct-broadcast satellite and Internet-protocol-TV set-top maker Thomson Consumer Electronics has signed the CableCARD Host Interface License Agreement with Cable Television Laboratories Inc., paving the way for the company to build cable set-tops that can be sold at retail.
The two-way boxes would allow consumers to use all cable companies’ interactive offerings, including video-on-demand and interactive program guides.
While Thomson has largely sold set-tops to telcos and DBS companies, it provides cable modems to U.S. MSOs.
“These specifications are one of the most important industry standards emerging for the cable industry, and the licensing agreement is a major milestone in Thomson’s growth strategy for the U.S. cable market,” Thomson vice president, worldwide cable business unit Frederic Kurkjian said.
