What is the preferred setup for video on this unit?
I think WAY back when it first came out, there was no "passthrough" mode?
I just noticed (whilst going throught the "settings") that I see a Video Mode. Mine is NOT currently set for passthrough.
I seem to remember somewhere that i had to go through this whole setup thing and tell it what resolution to do and all that jazz.
I would imagine that my Mits. 55" widescreen has a better scalar than the SA unit. It's my understand also that unless you choose "passthrough" on the SA unit, it will upscale everything to whatever resolution you picked (1080i in my case).

I don't remember pass-through being an option on the 8000 DVR. It is an option on the 8300 DVR.
The pass-through setting will do just that....pass through the resolution the station is sending to your HDTV. For example ABC, FOX, and ESPN are displayed as 720p and NBC, CBS, PBS, INHD, HDNET, and Discovery are displayed as 1080i. An option would be to "up-convert" the 720p signals from ABC, FOX, and ESPN to 1080i.

The 8000 DOES have pass-through in the settings section. It's not in the shorter list that you get when you hit the settings button just once, but the bigger list you get under more settings. There is also an upconvert-1 and upconvert-2. I wasn't aware it was an option until it had probably been there awhile. I LOVE the pass-through mode, but have no idea what the other 2 are for and it is NOT explained in the user guides. I just wish the pound key would change the stretch modes like it's "supposed" to. I called and a customer service rep. said that it works on some remotes and not on others. I guess I'll have to trade it in.
PS. Please please....those who trade in the 8000 for the 8300 keep listing the differences. I REALLY don't want to have to pull my TV out of my cabinet again if I don't HAVE to!!!!! Kris

Great, that's what I thought. I could've sworn that WAY back when I got my SA8000HD that passthrough wasn't an option (it was "fixed") but maybe it was. Something to do about watching "sd" vs "hd". Anway, the passthrough seems to work fine, although I really don't notice any diff (I think FOX is actually 480i until 2005). I knew ABC was 720, but didn't think that WNYT did 1080i on all shows.
Anyhoo, it seems to work fine, so I'll investigate and see if this fixes my "lip sync" problem.

So if I set my cable box to passthrough, do I still have to stretch the picture when I go from HD to SD?

The # button does work on the RT-U61CP-1.6S model remote (Silver Synergy IV remote). The default setting for Cable Setop has to be changed to to SA code 010 to get it to work. Many of the new Synergy IV remotes come with 010 by default, some of the first ones issued do not, you have to reset it to code 010

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Sony 007!!! I reprogramed the remote with the 010 code and VOILA! the pound key now works. It NEVER occured to me to try another code (duh)! (I prefer to use my TV to re-size the analog channels because my TV does a better job.) Now, should I need to re-size the HD channels its a one button job! TWO calls to TW customer service and where do I FINALLY get results?? Here! THANKS again Sony 007!!!
