This message was emailed from TiVo on Tuesday, January 27, 2004:
In 2003, we announced two new reference designs to support HD products, each available for our consumer electronics partners to license. This year, the first product based on these designs—a combination TiVo DVR/satellite receiver for the DIRECTV satellite service—was in fact among the standout products at the 2004 show (and not just according to us!).
The highly anticipated new DIRECTV® HD-DVR with TiVo® service, a high definition digital video recorder (DVR), is capable of recording two programs at once and features four tuners so that it can automatically identify whether an incoming signal is satellite or off-air and then engage the proper tuner for recording. DIRECTV has identified the end of first quarter 2004 for availability.** And it should be worth the wait: Not only was the DIRECTV® HD-DVR with TiVo® service honored at the show with a Consumer Electronics Association "Innovations Award," but a gaggle of CNET.com folk who attended the show placed it second in a list of ten products they believe will emerge as the most coveted consumer electronics of this year. CNET even ran away with some video footage. Can we get a "woo-hoo"?!
Meanwhile, just to be clear, current TiVo® DVRs were designed to support standard definition television broadcasts. They do not support High Definition broadcasts. While it is possible to connect your current TiVo® DVR to your new HD television (or to some High Definition cable boxes/satellite receivers, for that matter), your TiVo® DVR will only record programs from standard definition channels, and all recordings will be displayed in standard definition.
Remember, you can get help with most of your technical questions by visiting our support website or by sending an e-mail to the TiVo e-mail team. For account-related issues, you must use Manage My Account or give us a call.
**Remember, TiVo Inc. created the reference designs for an HDTV-compatible DVR. Any resulting product, its features and availability are to be determined by each manufacturer, not TiVo Inc. I know, I know... We're just as excited as you are about these products and we pinky-swear to keep you posted on new news. Please, hang tight.
