AT&T has launched a new TV service in Houston, which includes nearly 30 High-Definition TV channels.
Houston is the second city where the telco has launched a TV service; it has offered a trial service in San Antonio for the past six months.
AT&T's TV service will initially be available in limited areas of Houston, but the company expects to expand it soon.
Called U-verse, AT&T's package includes more than 300 channels and five different channel packages. The 27 high-def channels are:
A&E HD Cinemax HD (East and West feeds) Discovery HD Theater ESPN HD ESPN 2 HD Food Network HD HBO HD (East and West feeds) HDNet HDNet Movies HGTV HD ABC HD (local) CBS HD (local) NBC HD (local) Fox HD (local) MHD National Geographic HD NFL Network HD Showtime HD (East and West feeds) TMC HD TNT HD Starz HD (East and West feeds) Universal HD WealthTV HD
AT&T said last month that it would offer TV service (including HDTV) in 15 additional markets by year's end. The telco did not specify the cities, except for Houston.
AT&T and rival telco Verizon are hoping to compete with cable and satellite in the lucrative TV business. Verizon, which has already launched service in several markets, recently announced a price hike.
Multichannel News says AT&T will charge a $10 "technology" fee for HDTV programming packages. But until March, it will offer free HD for two months.
