* 8000HD DVI active *
I'm at work now but wanted to give a quick update... my 8000HD had channel 0001 this morning so I knew it had rebooted. I went into the menus and saw that I now had "Copy to VCR" and the space remaining graph.
The settings menu now has "Passthrough", which worked like my old 3250HD. I switched to my DVI input and it now works too. The settings menu has "Auto DVI" as an output option.
I didn't mess around too much, but each time my TV switched resolution in Auto DVI mode (say from 480i to 1080i), it would lose sync and I'd just see static. I had to unplug/plug in the DVI cable to get it to sync again. This resolution switch worked fine with my old 3250HD, so I'll have to play with it more when I get home.

I just posted a message in the 8000HD "defective" thread about the new software update. However, my source at TWC said the DVI port was still not active. I'm not at home, so I can't hook my TV up to the DVI port to see if it works.

Tried the record to vcr and it works. It resizes the picture though and looks like you lose a little picture around the edges. I don't see a time remaining graph though. Where would I find it?
Finally, has anyone gotten their cable out to work yet? I have my box hooked up to my audio video system and would like to be able to watch standard def shows like the news without having to turn on the stereo.
Thanks.

You have to make the box output to 480i to do that. The instruction manual should tell you how to do that. Don't have a link handy at the moment.

ok, I know I'm going to sound stupid, but why do I want to use the DVI port and what does the DVI cable go to? The TV? I currently use monster cable from the DVR to the TV.

last I heard, the DVI being activated was not part of the new firmware? I know whenever my 3250HD went t static, I would just either power the converter off and back on, or the shortcut is to hit the # on the remote (zoom button, put it back to full, static goes away)

I was still able to watch via DVI after turning the box off and on, however. The other funny thing is that my DVI port on my Sony *is* HCDP compatible. Very odd. But I'm digging my DVI connectivity on my 8000HD now. Also, the Pound Key is the Zoom key on the remote? If that's the case, couldn't they have made that clearer???

I'm on vacation and unable to check out the DVI capability of my 8000HD, but when I had a 3250HD, I got the same HCDP non-compatible message on my HDTV. Turning the 3250HD off and then on solved the problem, but it was still a pain in the butt. I was one of the few people to use the DVI port when it was activated and TWC Albany was trying to resolve the issue. I got a 8000HD DVR before they found a remedy. Sounds like there is the same issue with the 8000HD.
Hey Econ:
By using the DVI port, you free up a RGB HD input on your HDTV. For example, I have two RGB HD inputs and one DVI HD input on my HDTV. Right now, I have my 8000HD and my OTA HD STB hooked up to the two RGB HD inputs. Once I can get the DVI port to work on the 8000HD DVR, I can use the RGB HD input it was using for my DVD player.

Skaggs, After my original post, I read up on DVI connections. I was told that the picture may or may not be improved using a DVI connection. I too have 2 RGB HD inputs on my Hitachi 50V500 TV and am using these 2 inputs for the 8000HD and my OTA HD STB also. When I use the 8000hd I use Vid 1 and when I use OTA I use Vid 2. When I use the DVD player I disconnect my OTA HD hookup and connect to the DVD player. I called Hitachi and a technition told me that using a DVI connection would simply take the place of of the RGB HD input that works on Vid 1.Should I check into this further?

I like the fact that I can use my DVI port because I have three component connections (TV, DVD, and XBox). Using the DVI Port means that all three are connected at once.
The HCDP issue is annoying, espeically when my TV IS HCDP compatible (unless the Sony documentation is lying to me...). Skaggs, you're saying it's a bug within the box itself? How often does it happen? I've noticed it's happened about once a day.

Well I have been using my box to record a few movies since the download and I have found that they have indeed fixed the stuttering audio issues . I have not had the picture hiccup and audio stutter in any of my new recordings. .. It took them long enough . Speaking of long I was awake at 430 am the other morning when the box was getting its update . It took much longer than an actual boot . It seemed to take about twenty minutes before it was through. The numbers on the front display were changing rapidly it was kinda cool ...

My source at TWC Albany has told me that the 8000HD DVR will indicate to the users that the DVI port works, but it will not work correctly until the next software release.

Can't get the DVR port to work -- well, it will give me the guide, but no programming. Looking forward to having it functional as I have Progressive sources (Dish Network - the DVI does work but I can't hook it up the way things are set up now), DVD and TWC. I'm switching thru my Denon component inputs, but the bandwidth isn't what it should be - good picture, though.
