UPS delivered my 8000 HD today . I just finished hooking it up. To say I am psyched by this box is an understatement . Like Hank says its huge very huge . The build quality of the unit is very nice indeed feels like a nice peice of kit . I paused and rewound some insectia on discovery hd to see if the playback would be beautiful and lo and behold it was very very close I would say as good as the live feed but give me a little more time to scrutinize it before I make that statement . I am so very impressed with this box . Now I can get rid of all that indemand garbage that I was using . If you would have told me ten years ago that in the year 2004 the most technologically advanced peice of gear in my rack was coming from the CABLE company I would have bust a gut laughing at you .. but here it is ...happy hd veiwing all .. ;D

After hearing about others being able to get the 8000 at the local TWC office I was thinking that I must have just missed out on the initial shipment. Then I received a call from a woman last night who stated she would like to schedule an appt. for me to get my new 8000 HDDVR, I told her that I would prefer to pick it up myself and do the self-installation and she said no problem just call your local office and confirm they have one in stock. It was to late to call last night so I called the 800 number this morning and the CSR checked with the local office to see if they had any and she told me they did. I drove over to the Saratoga office on West Ave. and turned in my 3250, a woman in the back came out and was wondering why I was doing this and not getting an installation, I did not want to tell her that I probably had a better idea about these new boxes than the techs. Well anyway, the 8000 is now living on my entertainment rack, nice looking piece of equipment. I like the looks better than the 3250 and it is bigger and heavier. I let my daughter(2 yr old) watch the first show this morning and I paused Sesame Street so she could eat, went back and pressed play and it picked up where we left off. This is great, now to program my weekly programs. If you did not get one of these yet, run don't walk to your nearest office and grab one before they are gone. Kurt

Posted this on AVS but didn't get a response...
my 8000HD's hard disk sounds like it spins non-stop, even after it's done nothing all night long (powered off). Is this normal for the 8000HD and other DVRs? Seems like a waste to run the hard disk all the time. The top of the case is slightly warm to the touch as well.

I have two TiVo's and their fans are always running. The TiVo's also record shows it feels you might be interested in, based on your past recordings, so it is almost always recording. I leave my 8000HD on all the time. I just went over and put my ear close to the unit and I could hear the fan and the hard drive spinning. The TiVo's do not have an on/off button, so I never thought of turning the 8000HD off. Will it "wake up" from being off to record a scheduled recording?

The on/off button on the 8000HD pretty much just turns off the video output and the green light on the front.
It still records programs when "off".

I was wondering also. I just watched Ghost Ship, I recorded it late last night on HBO HD. It was my first time seeing it. The movie itself was alright but the transfer was superb. I noticed a few audio drop-outs in the beginning and at the end credits. Maybe they were there during the broadcast, I don't know. The audio dropout is not a big deal--the old non-DVRs do this too (at least at my house). It's the part where my receiver switches from Dolby Pro-Logic to Dolby Digital, then back again at the end of the movie. Matter of fact, with the old HD box I had (the 3100, not the 3250) it would actually switch from Optical Out back to Analog since the 3100 did not down-convert to normal PCM for non-digital audio.
