I get excellent reception of FOX in Hoosick Falls with $100 Radio Shack ant about 20 feet off ground. I'm in the low elevation area of the village (probably about a 150 feet difference from the higher areas).

On another thread, uzi asked
"I'd like to know, too, how many other DIRECTV people we have here. I am definitely one, but I feel alone."
So if you use DTV, how about saying so ... that way we can get an idea of how many here do use it. Maybe admin will pin this at the top of the board.
I have been a DTV subscriber for about 7 years. I have always been happy with it. I have never called with a tech problem and called once for a billing question. Now that the locals are HD they have everything I need.
I did subscribe to, and enjoyed, NFL Sunday Ticket for several years but the price got up to more than I wanted to pay and cancelled.

I just called tech because I couldn't see the new channels and he walked me through the process to get the channels to show if they aren't already. I have the DVR so your menu selections may be slightly different.
Check in your channel set up first to see if the channels are already there. If you have a custom channel setup be sure to check there. If they are not available, here are the steps to get them to show.
Hit the "SELECT" button after each step
1) Menu (on the remote) 2) Setting (or Setting & Help) 4) Set up 4) Sat (or Sat & Ant) 5) Repeat Sat Set Up 6) Put in - (dash) The dash button on the remote is just below the 7 button. (There may be a statement here to have a qualified service tech etc. The tech said to just continue). 7) Select 5 LMB dish
For the rest of the steps just select continue (Hit SETUP) There is one step where the it searches and takes about 5 to 7 minutes. It says the percentage of done.
Now go into your channel setup. You will see 2 WRGB's, 2 WTEN's, etc. Click in or 'turn on' by clicking in the empty box and turn off the yellow filled box .
PBS is also added.

Wouldn't you think Time Warner would attempt to catch up with the number of DirecTV HD channels? If TWC doesn't add double digit HD channels in December, I predict you will see a huge exodus to DirecTV. Does TW even have pipes large enough to get much more through?

Also, if you have intentions of signing up for any of the sports subscriptions, be sure to mention this. The Sunday Ticket football subscription seems to be a big deal.
My Mits TV does not have a QAM tuner and you can be sure if I buy one that DTV will announce it has agreements to broadcast the locals in HD within hours.

in another thread you said "I check Directv website and call a rep...gosh...I have to give them some greens to get those HD DVR's... and some non HD DVR's for the kids rooms...a receiver for the kitchen tv...the kids game room....hmmm.....expensive...upfront costs....almost $1000 according to the Directv rep....he just didn't understand why I started laughing....I apologized and hungup."
Hi dkennedy,
First I'd like to say thanks for all the great updates you post. As a DirectTV subscriber I can just look at the satellite update page of the forum and know what going on.
You say DTV wanted you to shell out $1000 to switch to DTV. That sure is a lot of green.
Since there is no charge for installation, receivers are no charge except for DVR's, what cost almost $700 in UPFRONT costs? Did you want DVR's for several TV's?
I just added HD to my subscription with the DTV Plus HD-DVR (current top of the line) for $140 with free installation of a new required dish. It took me a couple of calls to get someone to work with me but I got what I wanted. The cost for the DVR was $199 (shipping charge was deleted) and he gave me six months of HD for free ($60 value).
The reason I am curious about your costs is that a couple of coworkers are interested in subscribing to DTV for the HD content. I am not questioning anything you wrote about your call to DTV, it just sounds excessive to me. I wouldn't consider switching either for that cost. I will ask if my coworkers will call and get a figure for an install at their homes and report back.
By the way, I have been a subscriber of DTV for about 7 years and have very happy with them. I do get my internet service from TW, and locals via OTA.
Thanks, Steve

The DirecTV website has different packages listed here. Not sure what this means. I just signed up for DTV HD and was told it was 9.95. I got the HD-DVR and six months free HD for $199. New 5 type dish and installation are free. The negotiations started at $299 plus $20 shipping, just for the DVR. It is greatly appreciated.

Another misleading thing is the "advanced fiber network." Their network is coax cable. The same as it has been since the 1980s. This is an obvious attempt to mislead people into thinking it is fiber optic, like Verizon FIOS In the village of Hoosick Falls, TW is all fiber. It was installed by Adelphia in approx. 2003.

I would tend to agree with hurnik. DirecTV just announced that Local channel HD was coming by mid 08. It may be here by Feb, as it is already in one area that was in the same press release. TW may be trying to slow down customer switching to sat. Only they would know how many people are switching, and it may be enough that they felt they needed to do something. It will be interesting to see how soon the new channels are available.

Hi dkennedy,
First I'd like to say thanks for all the great updates you post. As a DirectTV subscriber I can just look at the satellite update page of the forum and know what going on.
I was looking at the previous post in this thread. It says DTV wanted you to shell out $1000 to switch to DTV.
I just added HD to my subscription with the DTV Plus HD-DVR (current top of the line) for $140 with free installation of a new required dish. It took me a couple of calls to get someone to work with me but I got what I wanted. The cost for the DVR was $199 and he gave me six months of HD for free ($60 value).
Since there is no charge for installation, what cost almost $700?
I think, (I tried to call and confirm but have to give a phone number where you want the new install, my number shows as a current sub), that all receivers are no cost except for DVR's. Did you want DVR for several TV's?
How many receivers did they want you to pay for? It looks like you are trying to get service to approx. 7 TV's.
By the way, I have been a sub of DTV for about 7 years and have very happy with them. I do get my internet service from TW.

Zokmoe, The antenna guys came and installed the ant Monday. They did a chimney install. The guys were good, did the things I asked for (running/hiding the cable where I wanted it, etc). They were not the regular OTA ant installer, they were dish guys. The regular OTA installers' wife had to go to an emergency visit to the hospital that morning and was unavailable. The install. They used a ChannelMaster 3679 ant., one down from the best (highest priced, anyway), Radio Shack amp (Cat. No. 15-1108), added some extra cable so the TV can go anywhere in the room. They did not ground the ant, something I am not sure I am ok with since everywhere I look grounding is recommended except by this company and its installers. They say they have more lightning problems with grounded ants than ungrounded ants. I offered that if I was to pay more for the install would that make a difference and he said he still would not recommend it. Overall I am happy with the appearance and quality of the install. The reception. Channel 13 (WNYT)could not come in better. I get HD and it looks great. When they were here I could get (19) WCDC (WTEN feed) from Adams Mass, pretty good and (6)WRGB, WB45, and FOX23 was seeable but not watchable. Antennaweb.org call for 254 degrees from my location to the towers but nothing came in very well at that. I'm not sure what degree it is pointing at but it is about 20 dgs. different than any other ants I can look around and see. Since that night I have only been able to receive WNYT. In fairness, I live in very difficult location, behind a hill and very near the river, which naturally is the lowest elevation, but when we discussing the installation they said they were sure I would be at least able to get 6, 10, 13. I was trying to figure if I had the TV set up properly and the installers were honest in saying tuning OTA was not their thing. So I called. The install company is going to send the OTA guy down asap. I asked if the larger ChannelMaster antenna would possibly make a difference and he said he didn't believe it would. I don't believe it would either. I have tuned the TV to where I feel there is no more I can do with the TV. When I originally called for the install I asked what happens if I don't get what they say I will get. He said it would be $85. I'm going to see where we end up after the OTA guy comes and tunes it in. Keep in mind. Getting any programming in HD for me is a treat. We have Adelphia cable here and their *only* offering for HD is Showtime, CineMax, and HBO. I don't get any of these and don't want to. I called and they have no timetable for any more offerings and locals were not even on the radar screen. I do have Dir**TV satellite and locals are coming soon, ?June?, but to the best I can find they will not be offered in HD, this is my only ticket to local HD for now. My situation to your situation. Like I said, I'm in a difficult location. I don't believe the same applies to you. Personally, I believe you will get everything with no problem. A post in another thread from Shaftbury, Vt which is 20 miles past me. albanyhdtv.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1076512839
