Well, it's been over one year since I posted my original question. So, I guess that means I'll have to answer myself. The problem I describe above still occurs. Only now, I find that the box will switch channels over night when it's not powered on. On power-up, the box will be on a channel I've never watched. I finally called Time Warner just yesterday. They basically have no clue what's causing this. All they can suggest is that it may have something to do with their nightly updates to the box. These updates don't necessarily result in a re-boot, but may be causing the box to randomly change channels when powered off. Why it may be doing this, they can't say.

I have two Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR's in my house. After a recent software update, I began experiencing a problem with both boxes. I've always had the "last channel" selected as the "power-on" channel. But after this update, the 8300 now reverts to channel 01 on power-up even though "last channel" is selected. Alternately, if I reprogram the box to use a specific channel on power-on, it does start with the selected channel. I've rebooted the box by two methods, and that has not resolved the issue. I have noted that this problem generally occurs when the box has been off for several hours. I have also reconfigured the settings for both "power-save" on or off and that didn't change the outcome. Maybe I can use this as leverage for a new box. But aside from that, does anyone have any suggestions?

I honestly think this charge, in your case, represents more of a shortcoming of their billing system than an attempt to charge you for a service you don't have. I encountered a problem more than a year ago when I agreed to sign up for the home phone at a promotional rate of free for one year. They could not find a way to zero-out the phone charge, so they gave me the savings elsewhere on the bill. In the end, I still got the phone for free. But, it would suggest that their billing system does not allow for all the possible variations of services and fees that their "specialists" can generate. So, they kind of make it up as they go along.

I don't see this as a Guide option, but it would be nice to be able to only display subscribed HD channels. You can display one or the other, but not both. Maybe in a future update? I know I can wade through all channels and add those individually to the "Favorites". But that's a bit tedious.

Wonder how they automatically bring you the best quality picture? Does it somehow know that you have an HD box and automatically remove the program listings/guides/channels for the SD version of that channel? The guide already does this. If I remember correctly, you'd have to select that option. If you were to go to the SD version of WRGB on channel 006, it will automatically display the HD version. Their system already knows the type of box we have, and therefore makes the adjustment automatically.

Today's Times Union has an article stating that there is a lot of backlash as well as class-action lawsuits over this modem charge. The article also goes on to say that Time Warner reduced the price charged to its Internet-only customers by $3.95 per month. Can anyone confirm this? It appears that it would be prudent to wait this out to see how it ends before buying your own modem.

Woo Hoo!! The Gospel Music Channel HD! That's got to be the tipping point in preventing me from defecting to Verizon Fios! Now I know I'm getting great value with Time Warner! LOL

Of course, let's not forget that TWC is competing with satellite for the "most" HD channels. So, don't quibble over the small detail that NONE of the programming on a given HD channel is in actual HD. It's just a way to artificially inflate their total.

I posted back on July 12 that the guide on my 8300HDC was particularly slow to react each night after 11 p.m. I guess I'll try to answer my own question with a theory. I would speculate that this is due to the fact that guide displays programming for the following day at this point in time. The guide has always had "trouble" moving from one day to the next without hesitating. The transition is not smooth at all, and may also account for the lethargy in moving from day to day using the day+- buttons as well.

I am in the Albany division, and the remote DVR management is active and accessible under MyServices. Both my DVR's show up and include a listing of all future recordings. I did a quick test of the record feature by selecting a currently running program from the guide, and it worked fine.

Sure, at least they show up on the guide. Then I try to access those channels last night and get the "channel unavailable, try later" BS! Maybe I should try to reboot the box 5 more times....while standing on my head...with my left hand pointing north....while reciting the Declaration of Independence. Typical Time Warner. Perhaps I'll send them a check that says "Money is unavailable, wait until next month"!

They want to make their bundled customers think twice before switching their TV service to satellite. I've been certainly thinking about doing just that.

I would guess that the "west" channels are being eliminated because they only repeat the broadcasts of the "east" versions of the same. The east/west versions are basically mirror images of each other in programming.

I have a SA 8300HDC, and have been noticing recently that accessing and tuning through the Navigator guide can be very slow. Interestingly though, the slow down seems to occur after approximately 11:00 p.m.! Before 11 p.m., the guide responds relatively quickly in both accessing/opening the guide, and tuning through the channels on the guide. Anyone else experience this? I have not yet called TW customer service on this issue.

An updated version of Navigator was downloaded to my 8300HDC yesterday morning. (ver. 3.2 something) Among other things, it resolves the problem that caused the audio-out selection to revert to HDMI, rather than Dolby 5.1, each time I power cycled the TV. The box now maintains the Dolby 5.1 setting with each power-up. There are other changes which are described in an email Time Warner has sent to subscribers. Back again is the option of recording all occurrences of a program on a specific channel at any time. However, Navigator does seem to respond more slowly than before! As a precaution, I did reboot the box, but there was no change in response speed. Anyone else experiencing this issue?
