TWC finally getting new dig. cable interface
« Thread Started on Feb 22, 2010, 3:37pm »

I got a little booklet in the mail from TW today saying that starting in March they are going to be upgrading the Digital Cable interface to "navigator." This will allow us to do first run program recording, etc. Basically all the the things that DTV and Dish have, we will now have.

Glad to see TW is entering the 21st Century, although 10 years late. The whole navigator name confuses me a bit though, isn't there a navigator charge on my bill each month? It has been there for years, so have I been paying for this for years? Weird.

Wait until you see the Navigator interface. Then you may not think it's all that great.

Although the ability to do first run recording has always been in the SARA software for 2+ years now and our TW office has somehow refused to upgrade. (I don't believe it ever depended upon Navigator vs. I think they use TV Guide or something now).

I haven't gotten the pamphlet yet, but other friends have too. Did it have any details about the switch? Will it wipe our boxes or anything? Did it have any indication on a timeframe, or just March?

does this mean new boxes, or they can just upgrade the software?

it is just a software update, same boxes. The pamphlet says they will be updating each model of box separately so if you have two different model boxes in your house, one may be updated before the other.

So my friend got cable installed last week and they gave him a 8460hdc...branded by Cisco rather than SA. He mentioned it had the navigator interface after I explained what it was. I went into the Albany office today and asked to exchange for the 8640 and they had them in stock. So I now have a Navigator box!

Are there any other differences in that box vs the 8300?

It is identical in terms of connections to the TV and uses the exact same remote. It looks physically different and I know it has better internal hardware(in theory it supports Mpeg-4). I am actually curious to see how fast/slow Navigator runs on the 8300 compared to this box. It seems to run pretty quick on this one but I do notice an occasional hiccup so I am a little nervous the 8300 might be laggy with it.

You can just go in there and exchange to a model of your choice? Did they even ask why?

Yeah you don't have to have a reason. I few years back I specifically asked for the 8300 because it was the newest one they had, as long as they have them in stock they rarely even ask you a question. I completely legitimate answer is that you want the newest box they have. I've never had any issues.

I'm still trying to figure out some of the bugs in this new interface (i've got the 4250 HDC). I can't get it to maintain a "stretched" picture on the non-HD channels; I can't get it to stop "auto" switching back and forth from 720p to 1080i; and even more strangely, after I turn the box off, it still shows the resolution right above the clock (480p/720p/1080i). Also, and this could just be my built-in anti-TW bias, but the response time from remote to box seems even slower than before. Any thoughts?

I'm not terribly impressed with this update. I think I have the SD channels looking normal again, but i'm tempted to reboot the idiot thing and see if that stays set.

I really like the new interface so much easier on the eyes, seriously. and if you turn off 720p, and ony have 480p 480i and 1080 i checks it wont freeze up at much and channel surfing though hd channels is ALLOT more smooth then.

I DO HAVE ONE MAJOR complaint, and this goes out to all you audio buffs like myself. I have a onkyo HTS-5200 7.1 surround sound system. and previously I had a Optical cable for audio going from the cable box to the surround sound. I was able to get Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound perfectly fine on all the HD channels, and now after this interface update it no longer sends Dolby Digital 5.1 o my surround sound, and the audio is really bad now, Im going to try to call time warner to see what thats all about. Is anyone else not getting Dolby Digital send to there reciever? my Receiver is set to automatically detect it, and it used to do it fine, but like I said after this update t no longer does that.
